Zips football: The defensive depth chart

By George Thomas Published: August 19, 2012

Depth chart for base 4-3

DE

90 – J.D. Griggs, Sr., 6-5, 244

93 – Connor Seeman, Jr., 6-3, 227

Comments:  Griggs is fast and strong, but Seeman made his share of plays during camp.

DT

58 – Nico Caponi, Jr., 6-3, 270

56 – Isaiah Williams, So., 6-3, 264

Comments:  Caponi specializes in blowing opposing players up.  He’s tough, loves to hit.  Williams possesses similar potential.

NG

36 – Cody Grice, RFr., 5-11, 272

79 – Mike Davis, RFr., 6-0, 280

or 99 – James Price, 6-0, 305

Comments: Grice, who played high school ball at Firestone High School,  still has a lot to learn for the position, but showed some skills during the preseason camp.  Davis doesn’t look like your typical defensive lineman, but works hard.

DE

91 – Albert Presley, Jr., 6-2, 226

96 – Alfonso Horner, Fr., 6-3, 200

Comments:  Presley had this job locked up from the spring.  He’s fast, strong and he’s gone from a pass rusher with one move to one who has developed more.

SAM

45 – Justin March, So., 6-0, 203

54 – Dylan Evans, Fr., 6-2, 191

Comments:  March is fast and can hit.  Youth might be a problem but that can be nullified with intelligent play.

MIKE

8 – Kurt Mangum, Sr., 6-0, 233

47 – Gary Ransom, So., 5-11, 215

Comments:  No surprise given the leadership that Mangum displayed  on the field and sideline.  More importantly, however, is that he’s an intelligent player who picked up defensive coordinator Chuck Amato’s defense quickly.

WILL

5 – Troy Gilmer, Sr., 6-1, 230

53 – Jatavis Brown, Fr., 5-11, 203

Comments:  Gilmer fights off a challenge.  When the Zips lost a linebacker to injury earlier in camp, coach Terry Bowden said someone would have to step up and it seemed like the perfect opportunity for Brown, who got some serious looks.

S

33 – Josh Richmond, Sr., 5-11, 182

27 – Johnny Robinson, So., 5-9, 184

Comments:  No surprise here.

R

4 – Anthony Holmes, Jr. 6-0, 192

23 – Bre' Ford, So., 5-10, 204

Comments:  Holmes had a very good camp and Ford shows that he can deliver a hit.

CB

9 – Avis Commack, Sr., 6-3, 205

20 – Malachi Freeman, Jr., 5-9, 174

Comments:  Commack adds some size to the defensive backfield  and after quickly acclimating himself to the system, evolved into one of the better DBs on the team.  Whether that translates into being a lockdown corner remains to be seen.  Kind of shocked to see Freeman listed behind him because in a lot of situations he’d been on the opposite side of the field at the same time.

CB

25 – Micklos Blake, Sr., 5-10, 168

21 – Bill Alexander, Jr., 5-8, 170

Comments:  Surprised that Freeman isn’t listed as starter.

Specialists:

K

48 – Robert Stein, RFr., 5-8, 164

P

38 – Zach Paul, RFr., 6-3, 218

LS

43 – Adam Steiner, Sr., 6-2, 217

Comments:  Observations coming this week.
