Zips football: UA loses heart breaker to Wolverines

By George Thomas Published: September 14, 2013

ANN ARBOR, Mich:  It took a 10-7 deficit to the Akron Zips to wake the Michigan Wolverines from their Saturday afternoon doldrums at Michigan Stadium, but that wasn’t enough.

By that time the Wolverines had to know that were in a football game.  Despite their 28-24 win, they had to know that.

It took a four-play, 70-yard drive and a two-yard TD run by Fitzgerald Toussaint to give the Wolverines the victory.  Even then it was left in doubt after the resilient Zips continued to punch back.

Kyle Pohl threw for 311 yards on 25-of-49 passing for two TDs and two interceptions and came up just short on what could have been the game-winning drive.

The defense forced four trunovers including a pick six by Justin March who held Michigan's Devin Gardner to 248 yards on 16-of-30 passing with two TDs and two interception.

They may end up calling it a Notre Dame hangover on Michigan's part, but that would be a disservice to Akron.

Despite continuing some disturbing patterns defensively in giving up big playsthe Zips established a tone that they would do well to tap into as they look to the Mid-American Conference portion of their schedule.

Defensively, they pounded the Wolverines for more than a half holding them to 19 yards on the ground in the first half and eventually forcing them to rely on quarterback Devin Gardner’s legs.  They forced Gardner personally into four turnovers, including a pick six by March, his second of the game.

The Zips defense harassed him all afternoon and didn't give up.
