Zips football: Bowden adds 2015 commit from Georgia state champs

The University of Akron football team received a commitment for the class of 2015 this week.

Tyler Shipman, a 6-foot-1, 240 –pound FB/DT with the Buford Wolves in Buford, Ga. verbally committed to coach Terry Bowden and the Zips, according to multiple sources.

Zips football: Team will debut new uniforms

University of Akron football fans shouldn’t discard those traditional blue and gold colors just yet.

Pictures of new uniforms surfaced on Twitter courtesy of head coach Terry Bowden’s account showing a mostly black uniform with gold lettering and a gold chrome helmet. The only regular piece of equipment that Zips fans can expect to see is that helmet.

UA football: Zips offer Cincinnati quarterback

Akron offered Cincinnati St. Xavier 2017 quarterback Sean Clifford Thursday, according to Xavier  coach Steve Specht.

The Zips are the first offer for Clifford, who is 6 feet 2 and 190 pounds. He was a backup to Xavier 2014 quarterback Nick Tensing last season.

UA Football: Zips land Dayton QB prospect

The University of Akron football team received a commitment from quarterback Jacob Harrison from Chaminade-Julienne High School, according to Scout.com

Harrison, a dual threat quarterback, will be a junior this fall.  As a sophomore he connected on 67 percent of his passes for 2,771 yards and 19 TDs.  He also ran for 594 yards and 13 scores.

UA basketball: Nick Harney departs team by 'mutual agreement'

The University of Akron men’s basketball team has parted ways with a player that they hoped would be a cornerstone when he arrived.

Forward Nick Harney transferred to Division II Fairmont State in West Virginian, according to a Fox Sports Ohio report.

Zips coach Keith Dambrot confirmed the report Wednesday morning via phone call.

“We just thought it was in his best interest to play elsewhere,” Dambrot said.  “It was mutually agreed upon.”
