Zips get first win
Football
Akron racked up 534 yards of offense with the help of two emerging skill position players.
The Zips got their first victory of the season, beating VMI 36-13.
Akron also accomplished something it couldn't last season -- beat a Division I-AA team. Gardner-Webb, which finished at 4-7 last year, beat the Zips at InfoCision Stadium in 2010.
The game balls go to freshman Jawon Chisholm (188 rushing yards, 1 TD) and sophomore Keith Sconiers (154 receiving yards, 2 TD).
It's important to note that Clayton Moore protected the ball on Saturday, after his five-turnover performance at Cincinnati. Moore threw three touchdowns, but completed only 13-of-28 attempts, mostly because several balls were batted down at the line.
This was a well-scheduled game. The Zips needed a confidence boost heading into a winnable game at Eastern Michigan.
