Zips hoops: Gilliam understanding his role
When talking to senior forward Chauncey Gilliam the wistfulness can be heard in his voice as he talks about his senior season. It hasn’t been easy for him.
Beginning the season in the starting lineup, he was eventually usurped by Nick Harney and his tremendous play for a stretch.
He’s had his moments this year. He’s one of the reasons the Zips came back to beat the Kent State Golden Flashes at the MAC Center and he was also instrumental in the victory over Toledo.
He’s continued to suffer the aftereffects of meniscus surgery, so the play in recent games hasn’t been consistent. But give him credit for maturity.
“It's not been easy,” he said. “You think in your senior it's time to be out there for long minutes and be able to control the game with all the other seniors. But we have such a good team, it's competitive every day. It's who's on that night.”
What he needs to realize is that his status can change at any moment because of competition. He could just as easily find himself back in the starting lineup.
