Final: VCU 88, Akron 42
This one wasn't much of a game near the end of the first half, and the Rams never allowed the Zips to make any kind of a run in the second half.
VCU dominated the turnover margin (21-5) and shot well from the floor all night (35-of-65 from the field and 8-of-16 from 3-point range).
The Rams turned many of those 21 Akron turnovers into quick points, including several treys, beating the Zips down the floor. Akron also had two 10-second half-court violations.
Not much went well for the Zips.
Akron shot a dismal 35 percent from the field (15-43) and made only one of 13 3-point attempts. Demetrius Treadwell led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds. Zeke Marshall, in his last game with the Zips, had 11 points and five rebounds.
This was the largest margin of victory between a 12-seed and a 5-seed in NCAA tournament history.
10-minute mark, second half: VCU 74, Akron 34
Shaka Smart not only hasn't stepped off the gas, he's pushing the pedal through the floor. The Rams have continued to press and trap on defense and have hit multiple 3-pointers in transition. The Rams put the Zips in a hole in the first half and have buried them in the second.
Up by 30, the Rams haven't shot quite as well (now at 55 percent) but are now leading the turnover margin 18-2.
Walsh has continued to try and play through flu-like symptons. After a long run on the floor, Walsh jogged straight to the locker room and later returned to the bench.
Treadwell is the lone Zip in double-figures with 13 points and seven rebounds.
End First Half: VCU 50, Akron 25
Everything VCU has tried has worked, and the Rams have already doubled the Zips' total and are on pace to score 100.
VCU is 22-36 (61 percent) from the floor and 3-5 from 3-point range. The Rams are also winning the turnover margin 9-1.
Demetrius Treadwell has been the lone bright spot for the Zips with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and four rebounds. As a team, Akron is only 9-of-24 from the floor and 0-4 from 3-point range.
