Zips lose MAC Championship

Men's soccer

You can officially label Caleb Porter's first year as head coach a disappointment.

Northern Illinois beat Akron in the MAC Championship today 1-0.

Ashley Kozicki and Sinisa Ubiparipovic each had chances to score, but like all season, they were near misses. Ubiparipovic did, however, earn MAC Player of the Year honors. Seven other Zips won postseason awards as well.

Coming into the season in the national top 10, Akron let down believers the entire season. Of course, Akron may still earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. Once I find out how the process works, I'll let you know.

Akron won its third tournament in the past 12 months today in the MAC/Big East Challenge.

Overcoming 11 other teams, the Zips used top-10 scores from Brad Wright (third), Blake Sattler (fifth) and Vaughn Snyder (ninth).

With Snyder's emergence and Sattler's return from injury, Akron has really improved the past year. They certainly should be considered contenders for the MAC Championship in the spring.

The Zips beat Hillsdale 83-67 today at Rhodes Arena.

I'll have my full analysis Monday afternoon, including input from Jeremiah Wood and Keith Dambrot.
