Zips men's basketball: Observations from Zipsland
Just some random musings from Ziplsand:
Point guard Alex Abreu looks to be picking things up – at least in practice. With the MAC season looming and the Zips taking on Western Michigan Wednesday, it would be much appreciated if Abreu, who has struggled with weight, would turn to form. The team is currently on a five-game win streak and in that span averaging 5 points and 5.8 points per game. For those worried about his point total – don’t. Keep in mind that the Zips have been able to go inside for easy hoops more courtesy of talented front court.
Speaking of which, center Zeke Marshall is on a tear in that same span, averaging 16.4 points per game during the same span. Keep an eye on Marshall for the MAC season. The one thing he’s showing a lot more of this season is a willingness to be aggressive on the offensive side of the ball, something that would help the Zips immensely should it continue. It doesn’t hurt that his back-up, freshman Patrick Forsythe is flashing bits of his talents. For those who attend games take a look at Forsythe when he’s on offense in the paint. He calls for the ball. He wants it and when he gets it there’s little doubt that he’s going to try to score.
If you’re used to seeing Jonas Stalyga in mop-up time, make sure that you get a look at his new look – short hair and moustache. In practice he was almost unrecognizable.
