Zips pass first test
Men's basketball
Akron beat Western Michigan today, 72-57, to advance to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament. The Zips will play Toledo Friday night at 9 to advance again. In other MAC action, Kent State currently is beating Buffalo. Miami will play Ohio at 9 p.m.
The game was close until midway through the second half. A Nate Linhart dunk got the fans involved. After that, it was basically over.
Four players really carried the team. They are:
- Nate Linhart: 6 points, 14 rebounds
- Romeo Travis: 12 points, 10 rebounds
- Dru Joyce: 17 points, 8 rebounds
- Cedrick Middleton: 13 points, 2 steals
Fan support was disappointing. It seemed like Akron fans outnumbered Western Michigan's fans, but the Zips fans were nearly silent. It even took half the game for the AK-Rowdies to wake up.
I expect that to change tomorrow. Students won't have class. Alumni won't have work.
Feel free to comment about the fans below, but overall I was pretty disappointed.
