Zips pull off double-overtime victory; Kent falls to Ohio
Men's basketball
Akron stayed alive and its greatest impediment to repeating as MAC Champions died.
A 3-pointer by Steve McNees with 0.8 seconds in overtime gave Akron new life, much like Humpty Hitchens did against Toledo last year. The Zips pulled away in double-overtime to win, 97-89. Meanwhile, Kent State was never in the game against Ohio. The Flashes lost, 81-64.
Kent State could not survive a 38-point onslaught from Ohio's Armon Bassett. Akron, however, weathered 42 points by Carlos Medlock.
The Zips will play tomorrow at 7 p.m. against Western Michigan. With Miami beating Buffalo, Akron is 5-0 against the three teams remaining in the field.
