Zips ready to zone-in against BG
Men's basketball
Akron may be hitting the 98-mph fastballs pretty well. But Wednesday, the Zips step into the box against a knuckleballer.
Bowling Green plays a zone defense. Akron has shown the propensity to freeze against the zone, as do many teams. Take the Ohio Bobcats for example. On Saturday, the high-powered OU offense shot only 38.2 percent (including 4-of-20 from 3) and lost by 10.
Not to be Captain Obvious, but Akron will need to bring its 3-point marksmanship to make BG pay for implementing a zone. The Zips are tops in the MAC from behind the arc, more than 3 percent better than the next-closest team.
Aside from the unusual zone, Bowling Green's stats are very usual, right down to the Falcons' 7-7 record. But BG has made it clear that if you can't make your shots, they will put you away.
The Zips are two-point favorites.
