From a UA athletic department news release: The University of Akron men's and women's basketball teams will make 10 guaranteed television appearances during conference play, with the possibility of four additional TV opportunities, the Mid-American Conference and Zips Athletics announced on Tuesday.
The MAC TV package includes 55 scheduled games, the largest men's and women's television package in league history. In addition, there will be 15 men's basketball games aired live on ESPN branded networks.
The men's team will appear seven times on TWC Sports – with four additional 21-day wildcard opportunities on TWC Sports and the ESPN family of networks – while the women will make three appearances on TWC Sports.
Akron will open its MAC television schedule with a pair of match-ups featuring last year's MAC championship game participants. The first TV appearance will come on Thursday, Jan. 9, when the women play host to defending MAC Champion Central Michigan on TWC Sports at 7 p.m. ET. The men's first MAC TV game will come at Ohio on Sunday, Jan. 12. Tip-off between the Zips and Bobcats – who have faced off in each of the past two MAC title games – is slated for 6 p.m.
The men will face Eastern Michigan on TWC Sports both in Ypsilanti, Mich., and in Akron. The Zips will play at EMU on Wednesday, Jan. 22, and play host to the Eagles on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Both contests are set for 7 p.m. tips on TWC Sports.
Following a men's contest at Bowling Green on TWC Sports on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m., the women's squad will travel to Muncie, Ind., for a noon matchup with Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 15, on TWC Sports.
The men's squad will face back-to-back opponents on TWC Sports, playing on the road at Buffalo on Wednesday, Feb. 15 (7 p.m.), and playing host to Ohio on Saturday, Feb. 22 (6 p.m.).
Akron and Buffalo will face off on TWC Sports on back-to-back days in March, with the men playing host to the Bulls at James A. Rhodes Arena on Tuesday, March 4, and the women playing at Buffalo on Wednesday, March 5. Both contests are set to begin at 7 p.m.
In addition to the 10 set TV games for Akron, the men's squad could pick up four additional games, either on TWC Sports or on the ESPN family of networks. The Zips could face Toledo (Jan. 18), Central Michigan (Jan. 25) and Kent State (Feb. 1) on TWC Sports or ESPNU. Additionally, UA's season finale at the JAR against Kent State could air on ESPN2 or TWC Sports either on Friday, March 7, or Saturday, March 8. Game selections for these contests are announced 21 days in advance.
The league also announced that six men's and three women's contests at the 2014 FirstEnergy MAC Tournament will appear on TWC Sports.
All games will be produced in high definition, distributed by TWC in Ohio and New York, and offered to ESPN for inclusion on ESPN3, Watch ESPN and ESPN Full Court.
In addition to the MAC television schedule, the men's team will make five appearances on the ESPN family of networks during its non-conference slate.
Both squads kick off the season on Friday, Nov. 8, as part of a season-opening doubleheader. The women will take the court against Florida Atlantic beginning at 5:30 p.m. The men's squad opens the defense of its 2013 MAC regular season and tournament titles against Coastal Carolina at 8 p.m.
To commemorate the men's 2012-13 season, 2,000 replica championship rings will be given away as the Zips will receive their championship rings during pregame ceremonies. Each men's basketball season ticket account will be guaranteed to receive one replica ring and will receive a voucher for the ring with their season ticket mailing. The process for distributing the remainder of the rings will be announced at a later date.
The women will be honored for their 2013 MAC East championship, with the first 500 fans to enter the women's game will receiving a commemorative mini championship banner.
