University of Akron men’s basketball player Nikola Cvetinovic has been named to the Serbian National Team for the 2011 World University Games, which will take place August 13-22 in China.
Cvetinovic, a senior forward, will be competing for his country’s national team for the first time at any level.
The Serbian National Team will play in Pool B, which will include Hong Kong (Aug. 13), Russia (Aug. 14), Australia (Aug. 16), Canada (Aug. 17) and Turkey (Aug. 18). Elimination rounds are schedule for Aug. 20-22.
“Nikola making the Serbian National Team is a tribute to himself and to our program,” UA coach Keith Dambrot said in a prepared statement. “I am not surprised that he worked hard and stayed prepared to earn this opportunity. Players from our program have played very well in Europe and Nikola is one of them.”
Cvetinovic averaged career highs in points (11.7) and rebounds (6.9) per game last season and earned second-team All-Mid-American Conferece honors. He helped the Zips to a 23-13 overall record and its second MAC Tournament title in three seasons, advancing to the NCAA NCAA Tournament for the third time (2011, 2009 and 1986).
The Zips are currently preparing for a foreign trip that will include five exhibition games in Canada and start on Aug. 11.
