Zips target pair of juco cornerbacks

By mrasor Published: October 28, 2008

Akron is pursuing a pair of speedy, three-star cornerbacks from the same junior college in California.

    New offers...
Brandon Driver, cornerback, Santa Rosa J.C. (Calif.) Offers: Akron, New Mexico, Toledo, Utah State and Arizona Height: 5-foot-11 Weight: 180 Speed: 4.4 Notes: As a freshman, Driver tallied two interceptions and 22 unassisted tackles in 10 games. gives him three stars. says that Driver is playing in a competitive junior college conference. Akron was one of the later schools to start recruiting him.
Diamond Weaver, cornerback, Santa Rosa J.C. (Calif.) Offers: Akron, San Diego State and Portland State Height: 5-10 Weight: 184 Speed: 4.4 Notes: He wants to go somewhere he can play right away. Weaver went to Santa Rosa J.C. because it was one of the best junior colleges in the nation, academically.
Joe Vidovic, offensive tackle, Willoughby Offers: Akron, Bowling Green and Ohio Height: 6-7 Weight: 245 Speed: Not listed Notes: says Vidovic's stock has soared this season. Although he only has three offers, Akron is not in his top three. Ball State, who has not offered him a scholarship, is one of his favorites, however.

    Other notes...
As I mentioned earlier, Buffalo will play at Ohio tonight at 7 p.m. on ESPNU. The Bobcats are two-point favorites. An Ohio win would put Akron a full game ahead of the rest of the MAC East.
Tom Gaffney wrote about how the Zips are trying to use the long break to improve the team. As the headline writer put it, the Zips are taking the long layoff "in stride." Man, that cliche makes me want to gag.
Keep an eye on the ABJ for their series of stories about the Rubber Bowl. Pat McManamon wrote one today about the Browns' visits to Akron.
