Akron beat Northern Illinois 1-0 Sunday to win the MAC Championship behind a goal from Steve Zakuani in the second overtime.
The Zips had seven shots on goal, compared to Northern Illinois' one. I believe Michael Beaven was at the game. He might post some thoughts later tonight.
The Zips will play Winthrop at home on Tuesday. Last year, Akron blew a late 10-point lead to lose on the road. This year, the Eagles have to replace four of their top five scorers.
Tonight, they got blown out by South Carolina. I will break down the Eagles tomorrow.
Zeke Marshall notes...
In all the madness, I forgot to pay tribute to the architect of his recruitment: assistant coach Jeff Boals. That is one amazing sales job. If Akron does one day move to the elite level of mid-majors (i.e. Gonzaga), then Boals will be one of the key reasons. His alma mater, Ohio University, will be embarrassed for not hiring him when the Bobcats had an opening this summer. Boals is a really good guy. Enjoy him while he's here.
A poster on ZipsNation.org found a neat highlight clip on YouTube.
Keith Dambrot discussed the program's recruiting objectives with MAC-sports.com.
