Zips win MAC opener
Men's basketball
Akron (7-3) won its MAC opener, 66-62, over Ball State (4-5) in Muncie, Ind. The Zips were losing most of the game but closed the second half with an 18-4 run. Ball State was playing defense that extended past the 3-point line. It cost the Cardinals when they tired late in the second half. Listening to coach Keith Dambrot in the postgame show, Cedric Middleton, Nick Dials and Romeo Travis played well.
It was only Akron's second win in its last 12 games at Ball State. The Zips needed to win to keep pace with Miami (5-5, 2-0), who has won its first two MAC games, both on the road.
Don't pay too much attention to overall records. Miami's two conference wins are infintely more important than Buffalo's 10 wins over joke teams.
Dambrot also said Dials is favoring his surgically repaired knee. Dials may have a lighter practice load during the hectic conference schedule, the coach said.
