Points to ponder with Zips: UA big men announce presence to Kent State

By George Thomas Published: February 10, 2015

On this night the Akron Zips (17-7, 8-3 in the Mid-American Conference) grew up in a big way.

Unlike last week when they played against Ohio and let a game slip away they battled back after losing a double-digit lead to finish off their rival the Kent State Golden Flashes 16-8, 7-4).

Think about it, this could be as huge as when the Cleveland Browns beat the Cincinnati Bengals in their first meeting of the season to go 6-3 and make the play…err…never mind.  Let’s call it what is was, UA being led by a cooler than a cucumber freshman point guard to a win over the Golden Flashes without their best player, Jimmy Hall, who is out indefinitely with mononucleosis.  I had that once.  I feel for the kid because it literally is one of the most ridiculous energy zapping diseases every imposed upon humankind.   But I digress.  Basketball.  That’s where we were.  That little fact about Hall’s absence, however, doesn’t mitigate in any way the fact that the Zips took some strides.

This is the first game that everything could be seen working for the Zips – offensively and defensively in several ways.

On the strength of a breaking the collegiate indoor pole vault record, Akron junior pole vaulter Shawn Barber (Kingwood, Texas) has been selected by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as its Division I Male National Athlete of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday.

The accolade is the second of the season for Barber and represents the third time during his distinguished Zips' career in which he has been so honored by the USTFCCCA.

"It was his most impressive jump to watch," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "He is starting to get consistent and acclimated to the big bars. Of course he is staying focused and making sure he is ready for the most important bars at the championships."

By George Thomas Published: February 10, 2015

From a University of Akron athletics department news release:

Former University of Akron men's basketball coach Kenneth G. "Coach" Cunningham passed away on Monday at the age of 71.

Cunningham coached the Zips for four seasons after being hired in 1976. He posted a 42-61 record and was the last coach for the Zips as a Division II program. Cunningham was a key part in helping the Akron program make the jump to the Division I level and entering the Ohio Valley Conference.

"I have known Ken Cunningham for many years and was saddened to hear about his passing," men's basketball head coach Keith Dambrot said. "I have a lot of respect for him as he took many bumps and bruises during our program's transition to Division I basketball. His hard work and dedication helped set the groundwork for the success of our program, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."

Zips basketball: Fans get two more television games

By George Thomas Published: February 6, 2015

It’s getting real now.

Want to know how?  Cable companies are sniffing around Mid-American Conference games for broadcast and  given the fact that the University of Akron’s men’s basketball team is currently tied for first in the league’s East Division, they’re a beneficiary.

UA’s athletic department announced that two more Zips games would appear on the Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.  Joining Saturday’s airing of their game against Buffalo will be Tuesday’s contest against rival Kent State and the Feb. 18 season rematch against the Toledo Rockets.  The Zips will play both of those at home with 7 p.m. starts.

For those with Time Warner Cable, viewing should not be a problem. Those without Time Warner should be able to stream the game via any number of devices that have the WatchESPN app.  They include: Roku, Xbox One, smart TVs, assorted smartphones, tables, Apple TV and others.
