Akron Zips football: Bowling Green Falcons crush UA 59-10

By George Thomas Published: October 17, 2015

BOWLING GREEN:  The University of Akron Football team blinked Saturday against the Bowling Green Falcons at Doyt L. Perry Stadium Saturday afternoon and found themselves in a hole from which they could  not escape resulting in a 59-10 loss.

The Zips (3-4, 1-2) trailed 28-10 at halftime after the Falcons defense clearly displayed that it wasn’t just their offense and quarterback Matt Johnson driving the car in their so-far successful season.   They pumped the brakes on that with a performance that stifled the Zips and quarterback Thomas Woodson.

While they gave up yardage early, the Falcons clamped down, holding the Zips to 271 total yards on the afternoon, while they rolled up more than 500. They pestered Woodson enough that he couldn’t get into a rhythm on his way to a 13-of-28 for 91 yards performance.

And while the running game worked early, with senior back Conor Hundley breaking off chunks of yardage, the UA defense’s inability to stop the Johnson and his offense dictated that game plan’s quick demise.Johnson connected on 25-of-30 passes for 357 yards and five TDs with no picks and got the Falcons going early.

Akron Zips football: Director of athletics Larry Williams recalls games battling Denver Broncos

By George Thomas Published: October 16, 2015

Cleveland has suffered at the hands of the Denver Broncos for years and to the tune of three losses in AFC Championship Games over that span.

University of Akron director of athletics Larry Williams can offer insight that only approximately 60 individuals can when talking about the team from the Rockies that will invade FirstEnergy Stadium Sunday to play the Browns. Williams played in two of those games as a guard on the offensive line. It’s difficult to predict what words come to his mind when asked about the Broncos – or not.

The Fumble.  The Drive.

In that regard, he’s just like long-suffering Browns fans.
