The undefeated Wichita State men’s basketball team is the consensus No. 2 ranked team in the country following its victory in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday.

Akron native Darius Carter Jr. continues to play a key role for the Shockers, who are 34-0 overall and regulars on ESPN’s SportsCenter highlight show.

Carter, a Firestone graduate, is averaging 8.1 points and 4.5 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game for the Shockers. He has appeared in 33 games with six starts and is making 53.1 percent of his shots from the field.

Carter, a 6-foot-7 junior forward, is Wichita State’s fifth leading scorer behind senior Cleanthony Early (15.8 points), sophomore Ron Baker (13.1), sophomore Fred VanVleet (12.1) and junior Tekele Cotton (10.8).

Florida (29-2) is ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Top 25 polls. Both polls have the same teams in the top five, Wichita State is second, Villanova (28-3) is third, Arizona (28-3) is fourth and Louisville (26-5) is fifth.

Wichita State will enter the NCAA Tournament as the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament champions. The selection show is Sunday night on CBS.
