Archbishop Hoban advances to Division II state baseball semifinal

HUDSON: The Archbishop Hoban baseball team advanced to a Division II state semifinal by defeating Mentor Lake Catholic on Satruday at the Ballpark in Hudson.

Willoughby South defeats Green in Division I regional baseball final

CANTON: Willoughby South defeated Green 6-5 Saturday in a Division I regional baseball championship game at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.

The Rebels advance to the Division I state semifinals with a 23-5 record. The Bulldogs conclude their season with a 23-5 record.

Green advances to Division I regional baseball final

CANTON: Junior right-hander Mark Zimmerman pitched a complete game to lead Green to a 5-2 victory over Shaker Heights today at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in a Division I regional baseball semifinal.

Green will play at 2 p.m. Saturday against Willoughby South, which won 1-0 over Medina today, at Munson Stadium for a spot in the state final four next week in Columbus.

Archbishop Hoban coach Jim Diestel said six of his 11 seniors have made decisions on where they will play baseball and continue their educations in college.

Lucas Sokol is headed to the University of Toledo and Matt Gebacz is bound for Niagara University.

Medina triumphs in baseball, track and field

Medina High School experienced some exciting triumphs this past week with the baseball team securing an improbable victory and the boys and girls track and field teams notching two wins.

The baseball team overcame a 10-run deficit to defeat Solon 11-10 on Friday in a Division I district final at the Ballpark at Hudson.

Firestone's Shaffer plans to attend UA

Firestone High School senior Jordan Shaffer got his wish. He will get the opportunity to play baseball at the University of Akron.

''I am pretty pumped to be close to home,'' Shaffer said. ''My family will get to see me play, and I think it is great to have another local guy at Akron.''

Division I regional semifinal: Gahanna Lincoln ends Copley's softball season

COLUMBUS: Gahanna Lincoln defeated Copley 7-6 on Wednesday in a Division I regional semifinal softball game at Buckeye Field on the campus of Ohio State University.

Lincoln took a 3-0 lead in the first inning after five of the first six batters rached base via a single. Senior Brandis Fishel singled in junior Montana Fishel, and junior Emily Vinsel singled in junior Tanya Busby and senior Tiyona Marshall.

• Hamilton Ross senior offensive lineman/defensive lineman Sam Fernandez has committed to Kent State as a preferred walk-on, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Fernandez, who is 6-foot-2 and 280 pounds, was a first-team all-Fort Ancient Valley Conference Scarlet Division all-star last season.

Copley beats Wadsworth 3-2 for district title

Kenzie Wallace of Copley pitched out of two jams in the sixth and seventh innings had three singles and scored twice to lead the Indians (21-1) to a 4-2 victory Monday night for the Barberton Division I district softball championship, first in school history.

Casey Burns had a RBI triple in the first that scored Wallace, who scored in the second on a wild pich in the third inning and Emma Fish in the same inning had a RBI single. The Insdians other run was a RBI single in the sixth by Lauren Schoenewald.

Zips offer Cincinnati lineman

The University of Akron has offered a scholarship to Cincinnati Madeira junior offensive lineman Kyle Williamson, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Williamson, who is 6-foot-4 ½ and 275 pounds, is one of Cincinnati’s top offensive linemen in the 2012 class.

Copley, Wadsworth softball teams win; play Monday afternoon for district title

Originally scheduled to be play Saturday aftenoon, the Barberton Division I district championship game will be play 4:30 Monday afternoon between Copley and Wadsworth at the Barberton Athletic Complex off Barber Road.

The Indians (20-1), which won the Suburban League this year for the first time in school history, play Wadsworth (22-6) for the third time this season after the Indians easily won the previous two games.

Tallmadge Beats Marlington to Go to District Final in Baseball

The Tallmadge Blue Devils only needed the home half of the first inning to score enough runs to put the Marlington Dukes away in the Division II District Baseball Tournament at Munson Stadium Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Devils beat the Dukes 9-3 behind the pitching of junior Tucker Linder and 10 hits from its lineup.

From OHSAA: Competitive Balance Proposal Fails

The proposal by the Ohio Athleic Assocation to create competitive balance for football, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball and basketball among public and private schools failed 52-48 Tuesday. 

 The proposed bylaw would have changed how schools were assigned to post-season tourmaments using a complicated formula. In the end, it may have been too complicated, by using a number of factors including enrollment, a boundary factor and tradition.

Canton McKinley junior defensive end Se’Von Pittman is ranked No.61 on the list. Pittman, who is 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, reportedly has offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Tennessee and others, according to Rivals.com.

Green hires Ed Cybak to coach football team

Green Local Schools announced Wednesday morning the hiring of Ed Cybak as its new football coach. His hiring is pending approval from the Green Board of Education.

``I am extremely excited,´´ Cybak said. ``This a great opportunity. The community is very supportive and they demonstrated that yesterday [Monday] with a huge levy victory. They showed how important school is with their tremendous support for academics, athletics and other activities like band and choir.´´

Akron graduate Shyatt recruits Nance to Wyoming

When Revere senior Larry Nance signed a national letter of intent Saturday to play at the University of Wyoming it was a bit of a surprise, but Cowboys coach Larry Shyatt does have area connections.

Shyatt, 60, played at the College of Wooster and earned a bachelors degree in 1973. He received his masters degree from the University of Akron in 1975.

Wise's top events are the 100-yard freestyle and the 50 freestyle. She holds school records in both events; 52.83 seconds in the 100 and 24.55 in the 50.
