By mdyer Published: August 11, 2010

It goes without saying Buchtel junior WR Corey Smith (6 foot, 170 pounds) is one of the state's most recruited players in the 2012 class.

With scholarship offers from Akron, North Carolina, Michigan State, Toledo and Miami (Ohio), Smith said he's glad to have the early offers but he is keeping everything in perspective.

Smith, who was voted the City Series preseason offensive player of the year last week, said he's looking forward to the season as Buchtel returns 14 starters overall. Buchtel, the reigning City Series champion, has been voted as the favorite this season.

Smith said Buchtel is "trying to win state" in Division III this season. Buchtel returns a lot of speed on both sides of the ball which will be key.

Smith caught 28 passes for 482 yards and seven touchdowns in 2009 despite missing three games. He said college programs like his hands and playmaking ability.

Smith has taken unofficial visits to North Carolina, Toledo, Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State and Akron. He said he expects Louisville could offer him this week.

Buchtel opens the season at Massillon at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26.
