Walsh Jesuit wins Div. I soccer state championship in 2-0 win over Mason

By Ryan Lewis Published: November 8, 2013

Walsh Jesuit won its seventh state title in Div. I or Div. II in 14 years with a 2-0 win over Mason at Columbus Crew Stadium on Friday night.

In the 36th minute, junior Julie Knapp crossed the ball on a corner kick. It was immediately sent straight into the air and then kicked around a bit. Freshman Sofi Rossi ended up with it in front of the goal and fired it past Mason goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro.

Walsh added the insurance goal in the 69th minute. Again off of a corner kick, senior Jessica Hlosek ended up with possession and flipped it over her head to sophomore Katie Quinn. Quinn followed a miss off the near post with a second shot that beat Bizarro.

Rossi, though, was never really expecting to play. She sustained a stress fracture in her left leg Sept. 28. Only 24 hours before the title match did she tell coach Dino McIntyre that she had been cleared to play.

We freaked out,” Walsh coach Dino McIntyre said. “I was like, ‘What do you mean? If you can play 30 seconds, let us know.’”
