Division II playoff preview: Lake vs. Sunbury Big Walnut @ Ashland University's Jack Miller Stadium

By izzy Published: November 18, 2010

The first meeting between these teams is intriguing. Sunbury is that exit of I-71 north of Columbus people often stop for gas or snacks to give you perspective on where the town is.

Understand this - Big Walnut knocked off Columbus Marion-Franklin 24-12 which held explosive Ashland to just seven points earlier this season, so you know its defense led by lineman Mitch Paulino, linebackers Corey Paulino and Jarrod Daugherty.

The storyline seems simple enough: who can run the football will win. With Lake running back Jim Luther had 246 yards on 38 carries as he continues to play on an injured knee. Keep your eye on quarterback Jon Spohn, who can throw effectively when need and whose primary target is Dan Reed with 28 catches and a 24.1 average per reception.

The Golden Eagles (10-2) rely on the ball-handling ability of quarterback Tyler Beam, who can run the option with a front line that loves to hammer on defenses. Lucas Garcia has been hobbled by injury as the primary back so fullback Jacob Walaszek can carry the load.

The Golden Eagles of Big Walnut were the Division III champions and is 14-5 in playoffs and the Blue Streaks are trying to improve on a lifetime playoff mark of 19-15.

The 7:30 Friday night game down I-71 to state Route 250 to Ashland University is a great challenge for the Blue Streaks (9-3), who are trying to get to the state semifinal.
