Firestone High School makes plans to celebrate 50th anniversary of its pool

By Michael Beaven Published: January 10, 2014

Firestone High School is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its pool this school year.

The pool at Firestone opened in October 1963, a gift to the community from the Firestone brothers – Leonard Firestone, Harvey Firestone, Roger Firestone and Raymond Firestone. The brothers were in attendance at the 1963 Firestone Natatorium dedication.

Since its opening, future state, national and Olympic champions have competed in the pool.

Kathleen Folkerth said the Firestone High Aquatic Association’s Golden Anniversary Bash is set for Jan. 25. Swimming and diving alumni, parents and supporters are invited to the annual fundraising gala from 6 to 11 p.m. at St. George’s Fellowship Hall, 3204 Ridgewood Rd, Copley, OH 44333.

A reverse raffle will award $2,000 in cash prizes and there will also be silent and live auctions of items generously donated by sponsors and businesses in the community. The event also includes appetizers, dinner, open bar and dessert. Tickets are $75 with an additional dinner only (no raffle ticket) priced at $25. For tickets, contact Joanne Sell at 330-620-3450.

For more information about the team, contact coach Cindy Virdo at 330-873-3321.
