Firestone High School senior Katie Miller has orally committed to continue her academic and swimming careers at the University of Notre Dame.
“Notre Dame is just a good fit top to bottom for her, academically and athletically,” Firestone swim coach Cindy Virdo said. “She is going into engineering and the way the classes are set up she will not miss practices or meets. She might have some overlap with some labs or study groups. All of there classes are done by 3 [in the afternoon].”
Virdo said Miller, 17, received a full-ride scholarship to compete for the Fighting Irish.
Ohio State and Auburn were also mix when Miller made her final decision.
“I am really excited for Katie,” Virdo said. “I know she will do really well at Notre Dame.”
Miller won the Division I girls state title in the 200-yard individual medley as a sophomore in 2011 in a time of 2:00.62 at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. She also placed second in the 500 freestyle as a sophomore.
As a junior at the Division I state meet, Miller placed second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 individual medley.
Miller also participated in the U.S. Olympic Trials earlier this year in the 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly.
