Garfield not taking winless East lightly

By Published: October 10, 2012

The Garfield football team (3-4) plays East (0-7) at 7 p.m. Friday in a City Series matchup.

East has been shut out four consecutive weeks, but Garfield coach Bob Sax said the team gives a full effort.

“They are big up front and will come at you for four quarters,” Sax said. “We have to stay disciplined and focused for the entire game. We have to establish our running game and continue to work on our passing game.”

Garfield lost to host St. Thomas Aquinas 27-20 last week and Sax said the team had its chances.

“We had the lead late in the third quarter and had a chance to take over, but fumbled the ball and gave them momentum back," Sax said. "To our kids’ credit, they never gave up. We played hard all the way up until the end.”

Sax said several players have led Garfield including Darrion Powers and Troy Robinson, who ran the ball well for the Golden Rams last week. Eric McCants and Noland Hamilton played well on defense, Sax said.
