Hoban defeats Holy Name 3-2 in state semifinal

Columbus: Matt Gebacz up four hits and survived a solo home run in the seventh as Archbishop Hoban held on to defeat Parma Heights Holy Name 3-2 Friday afternoon in the Division II state semifinal at Huntington Park.

Gebacz struck out seven, hit one batter and did not issue a walk to improve to 5-2. The lefty gave up a run in the sixth on a RBI single by Anthony Smith and Alex Kurowski's long home run to right field with one out in the seventh inning.

 Hoban jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Kerrigan Cain hit a sacrifice fly to score Kolin McMillen, who had singled to lead-off, and Tom Yakubowki's RBI single drove in Trevor Oldham, who had singled. Cain scored in the third on Brendan Taylor's single to left.

The Knights play Columbus St. Frances DeSales for the Division II title 4 p.m. Saturday at Huntington Park, their second appearance in a state championship and first since being state runner-up in 1993.
