Orrville's Pirman is Nebraska bound

Orrville senior outside linebacker Max Pirman will sign a National Letter of Intent Wednesday to play football at Nebraska.

Red Riders Athletic Director Kent Smith confirmed that Pirman will compete for the Cornhuskers.

Orrville trio make college selections

Orrville seniors Zach Wasson, Hillary Plybon and Sara Aultz will each be signing a National of Letter of Intent to play collegiate sports Wednesday, Red Riders Athletic Director Kent Smith said.

Wasson will play men’s basketball at Malone. Plybon and Aultz will play women’s volleyball at Austin Peay and Edinboro, respectively.

Olack opts for Toledo

Massillon wide receiver Justin Olack will sign a national letter of intent with the University of Toledo Wednesday, Tigers coach Jason Hall said Monday.

Olack, 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, had orally committed to the University of Pittsburgh. But the firing of coach Dave Wannstedt and the short-lived tenure of his successor, Mike Haywood, who was arrested on domestic violence charges, prompted the converted quarterback to reconsider. Eventually Pitt hired Todd Graham as its coach.

Kent State lands big-time big back

Cincinnati Colerain senior fullback Trayion Durham has reportedly made a verbal commitment to Kent State, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Durham, who is rated the nation’s No. 19-ranked player among Big Backs in the 2011 class by MaxPreps.com, had offers that included Michigan, Cincinnati, Kentucky, North Carolina State, Louisville, Boston College, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Colorado.

Buchtel Hoopsters May Get a Break

High school hoops fans who are fans of Buchtel and St. Vincent-Mary have reason to celebrate - the Ohio High School Athletic Association has separated the two teams in the upcoming sectional tournament.

Buchtel has been moved to the Stow-Munroe Falls site, while the Irish will remain in Canton. It's a move that will ensure that the two teams meet further down the line in the tournament.

Banner day for Walsh Jesuit girls soccer

The Walsh Jesuit girls soccer team received a trophy and a banner from ESPN Rise on Tuesday night at the team's season-ending banquet at Emidio & Sons Banquet Center in Cuyahoga Falls.

Walsh finished first in the ESPN Rise FAB 50 poll, the third time the Warriors have won a national championship in girls soccer. The 2010 team joins the 2000 and 2006 teams that won state and national titles. Walsh's 2001 and 2004 teams also won state titles.

St. V-M's Arnone appointed to Naval Academy

St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Maria Arnone has been appointed and accepted to the United States Naval Academy where she plans to compete on the cross country and track teams for the Midshipmen.

Arnone, a three-sport standout who carries a 4.0 grade-point average, received a Congressional Nomination from U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich of Ohio before his retirement at the end of his term, St. V-M Athletic Director Andy Jalwan said.

Walsh's Pugliese is Columbia bound

Walsh Jesuit senior Vinny Pugliese has made an oral commitment to continue his academic and football careers at Columbia University.

Pugliese, a 6-foot-2 and 210-pound linebacker-fullback, was a senior captain. He earned three letters and was a two-year starter for the Warriors.

A possible swimming rivalry

The two Division II schools will be at the same sectional in Akron, and if their swimmers advance, it will be to the same district in Cleveland and then possibly to the state meet in Canton.

Illinois linebacker commits to Akron

Danville (Ill.) senior linebacker Justin March has reportedly made a verbal commitment to Akron, according to The Commerical-News (Danville, Ill.).

March scored 30 touchdowns and had 353 tackles in helping Danville to a 24-2 record, according to the publication.

Buchtel's Oden Takes Official Visit

Buchtel senior safety Marlon Oden took an official visit to Notre Dame College of Ohio  in South Euclid this week.   Judging from posts on a social networking site, he was enjoying the experience.

Oden was instrumental in helping the Griffins reach the state football championship game. It's shocking that the 5-foot-10 player and Div. III all-Ohio team selection hasn't receive more attention.

Groveport Madison senior defensive tackle Anthony Pruitt (6-4, 260) and Orange senior defensive end Nate Terhune (6-4, 230) have verbally committed to the Golden Flashes.

Medina H.S. Golfer Commits to Michigan College

Medina Golfer, Austin Schreiber, verbally committed to Oakland University in Michigan on Friday, January 14.  Schreiber, a junior, toured the campus a week ago and found it to be a perfect match for him.  Schreiber is a three time All-Northeast Ohio Conference First Team player as well as a three time All Medina County performer.  He has led the Bees to three consecutive appearances at the state golf tournament, this year helping them to a school record 5th place finish.

Schreiber holds the school record for lowest 18 holes with a 69 at the Country Club of Ashland.  He is also the only player in school history to play in every event for three straight years.  his scoring average last summer was 74 and he led the team in fairways and greens hit.

Coaches propose football workouts in spring: The football coaches association made a proposal that would allow member school coaches to conduct non-mandatory individual skill development workouts with players during the last two weeks of May. The workouts would be a maximum of 10 total hours and would include helmets but no other pads. Athletes currently participating in an OHSAA spring sport would be required to complete their season before participating in these workouts. The Board will take action on the proposal at its April meeting.

Replay in effect for hockey:  The OHSAA Board of Directors adopted a proposal from the ice hockey advisory team to allow the use of video replay during the state semifinals and state finals at Nationwide Arena to review goals and the correct time on the clock.

Zips offer sophomore guard

The University of Akron has offered Cincinnati Aiken sophomore guard Austin Grimes. It is the first offer for Grimes.

Grimes, who is 6-3 and 200 pounds, is second in the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference in points. His season-high was 26 points on Dec. 17. He has scored in double figures in eight of nine games.

Zips spend time at Cincinnati powerhouse Colerain

The University of Akron football coaching staff was in Cincinnati this week and that included a recruiting trip to Colerain High School, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Akron was just one of several schools that visited the suburban Cincinnati school. Colerain senior Tyler Williams is verbally committed to the Zips for the 2011 class and is expected to sign his national letter of intent on Feb. 2.

Orrville junior LB Mason Monheim took an unofficial visit to Ohio State on Dec. 17, according to Orrville coach Doug Davault. Monheim, who has an offer from Illinois, is one of Ohio’s top players in the 2012 class.

Walsh's Connor Cook remains committed to Michigan State

Walsh Jesuit senior quarterback Connor Cook remains verbally committed to Michigan State despite the fact that Spartans offensive coordinator Don Treadwell was hired by Miami University as the new head coach last week.

Walsh coach Gerry Rardin said in an e-mail this morning that he was “99.9 percent sure” Treadwell’s hiring at Miami would not affect Cook’s commitment to Michigan State.
