Perry softball team in Division I state semifinal

Perry (25-3) vs. Holland Springfield (23-6)

What: Division I state semifinal.

When: 3:30 p.m. today.

Where: Firestone Stadium.

About Perry: The Panthers are making their third appearance in the state tournament after qualifying in 2003 and 1998. Senior cleanup hitter Kourtney Yarnall is Perry's top hitter with a .429 batting average, 39 hits, 28 RBI and three home runs. Sophomore Jayla Saibene bats third in the order and has .398 average, 26 RBI, four home runs and 24 runs scored. Sophomore Shelbi Tilton (.348) and seniors Caity Ferrell (.314) and Sarah Samblanet (.301) are three other key hitters. Tilton and senior Maria Tayse each have 15 RBI. Tilton had walk-off doubles that scored the winning runs in dramatic regional wins over Ellet and Boardman. Junior right-hander Casi Rohr is Perry's ace pitcher with a 22-2 record and a 0.77 ERA in 154 2/3 innings pitched. She has 198 strikeouts and 31 walks. Senior Anna Fach and sophomores Abbey Filliez and Morgan McLaughlin round out the starting lineup for coach Alison Heppe.

About Holland Springfield: The Blue Devils are making their first apperance in the state semifinals after defeating Elyria, the defending Division I state champion, 2-1 in their regional final. Senior second baseman Jesse Zappone led that game off with a home run to left field, her fourth of the season, and doubled and scored in the third inning following a single by junior shortstop Patrece Gibson. Senior Ashlyn Michalak pitched a complete game for Springfield and earned the win. Sophomore first baseman Emily Rockman, senior third baseman Krista Haley and junior left fielder Cailyn Cordrey are three other key hitters for coach Rob Gwozdz.

Other semifinal: Liberty Township Lakota East (26-5) vs. Grove City (27-4), 5:30 p.m., Thursday.

Title game: 1:00 p.m., Saturday.
