Report: Marlington's Shawn Kirk set to walk on as kicker at Akron

Marlington senior Shawn Kirk has accepted a preferred walk-on offer to kick for the University of Akron football team, according to

Kirk chose to pass on chances to play quarterback at other schools and kick at UA.

Kirk was the Northeastern Buckeye Conference Player of the Year this past fall, helping the Dukes return to the playoffs for a second year in a row as their quarterback. He was a four-year letterman and led Marlington to a 37-9 record.

This past fall, Kirk completed 77 of 138 passes for 1,084 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for a team-high 19 touchdowns and gained 886 yards on 157 carries. He also intercepted two passes as a safety.

Kirk converted two of three field goals over the final four games, including a 46-yard boot and went 11-for-11 on point-after touchdown kicks. He also averaged 39.1 yards on 19 punts the final four weeks, putting four of them inside the 20.
