St. V-M Claims Sixth State Boys Basketball Title

By gthomas Published: March 26, 2011

Using an 11-2 run to wind down the third quarter, the St. Vincent-St. Mary Irish beat Dayton Thurgood Marshall Cougars to claim their sixth state boys basketball title.

Lorenzo Cugini led the Irish with 15 points in the game and he was followed by DaVonte Beard with 13 points.  For the 19-9 Irish it respresents a significant triumph given the amount of adversity the team had to overcome.

Prior to the start of the school year, coach Dru Joyce's team lost its dominating player in Jakarr Sampson, who left for a New Hampshire prep school.  Then when faced with different roles for some players, inner turmoil resulted.

Joyce would not say that this was his best coaching job when it probably was, but he did offer that it was his toughest and this championship represented the most unique one.
