St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Maria Arnone has been appointed and accepted to the United States Naval Academy where she plans to compete on the cross country and track teams for the Midshipmen.

Arnone, a three-sport standout who carries a 4.0 grade-point average, received a Congressional Nomination from U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich of Ohio before his retirement at the end of his term, St. V-M Athletic Director Andy Jalwan said.

''I am really excited about the opportunity,'' Arnone said. ''I am kind of nervous about it, but I am mainly excited to get to serve. I think it will be a real cool experience.''

Arnone is on pace to graduate from St. V-M with 12 varsity letters, four each in cross country, basketball and track.

Arnone helped the Fighting Irish win the past two Division II state team titles in cross country for coach Dan Lancianese. As a senior captain, she placed ninth and covered the 5,000-meter Scioto Downs course in 18 minutes and 27.80 seconds. She placed seventh as a junior with 19:19.64.

During the 2010 track season, the Irish's 3,200-meter relay unit of Emily Tomei, Samantha Kirk, Tessa Weigand and Arnone set Orrville district (9:25.22) and Lexington regional (9:17.51) records before winning the Division II state championship (9:17.15) at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. That unit took fifth at state in 2009.

Arnone is also a key scorer for the basketball team under coach Joe Jakubick.
