State softball scouting reports for North Canton Hoover, Walsh Jesuit

Who: North Canton Hoover (32-0) vs. Mentor (20-10).

What: Division I state semifinal.

When: 10 a.m. today.

Where: Firestone Stadium, Akron.

Notebook: Hoover ended the regular season as the top-ranked team in the state poll and is the two-time defending Division I state champion under coach Jerry Goodpasture. The Vikings are seeking their seventh state title (2012, 2011, 2008, 2006, 1999 and 1998). The Vikings are led by junior Jenna Lilley at bat and junior Tara Thacker on the mound. Seniors Caly Russo, Ally Farrah and MacKenzie DiPietro are also regular contributors along with freshman Andrea Farrah and sophomore Kathleen Shier. Unranked Mentor defeated Solon and Medina in the regional bracket. The other Division I state semifinal pits No. 5 Elyria (26-5) against unranked Mason (23-7) at 12:30 p.m. today. The state final is set for noon Saturday.


Who: Walsh Jesuit (26-5) vs. Newark Licking Valley (22-7).

What: Division II state semifinal.

When: 3 p.m. Friday.

Where: Firestone Stadium, Akron.

Notebook: Walsh is ranked No. 8 in the final state poll and Licking Valley is No. 4. The Warriors are coached by Bill Davis and feature sophomore pitcher Taylor Rahach, sophomore shortstop Lilli Piper and sophomore catcher Riley Ries. Seniors Jackie Ammar and Lexi Noonan also bat at the top of lineup with junior Taylor Stimson. Licking Valley defeated Dover and Jackson in the regional bracket. The other Division II state semifinal pits No. 3 Springfield Kenton Ridge (30-2) against No. 6 Granville (25-6) at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The state final is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
