Sutton & Williams sign NFL contracts

By mikeb Published: April 27, 2009

A pair of former South Rangers pee-wee football players had an exciting Sunday evening.

Akron natives Tyrell Sutton and Bryan Williams, friends since they were children, each signed three-year undrafted contracts with NFL franchises following the conclusion of the 2009 NFL Draft.

Sutton signed with the Green Bay Packers and Williams signed with the Cleveland Browns. Both report to their respective team Thursday for meetings and then practices for rookies on Friday. The duo each share the same agent, Alonzo Shavers.

"My agent called me not even five minutes after the draft ended, and then the Packers called me," said Sutton, an Archbishop Hoban High School graduate and Northwestern University product. "I was ecstatic, I was actually in my car driving by myself in Evanston when the calls came."

"I am not guaranteed a spot," Sutton said. "I am going in as if I am not even on the team. I am trying to win a spot, whether it's on special teams or as a third down back. I am definitley excited. This is a team with great history and I am happy to be a part of it."

Williams said he received a call from Browns special teams coordinator Brad Seely near the end of the sixth round and the beginning of the seventh round.

"I was stuck on the phone, my words weren't even coming out right," said Williams, a Buchtel High School graduate and University of Akron product. "I was at home watching the draft. I got a call, looked at my phone and recognized the number because I had saved it. Coach Seely said to me `We want you to be a Brown, we don't have any more picks, but we want you to be a Brown.'"
