Tallmadge senior offensive lineman Joe Lowery has given an oral commitment to accept a football scholarship offer from Ohio University.

Lowery, who is 17, is 6-foot-6 and 290-pounds. He earned third-team All-Ohio honors in Division II as a junior last year, his first as a starter. The Blue Devils won their third Suburban League title in a row last season and are 20-1 against league foes since 2010.

“I got really lucky being born with huge genes,” Lowery said. “I worked my butt off for this, to play college football and go to school for free at a Division I college.”

Lowery said he also received scholarship offers from the University Akron, Bowling Green, Toledo, Western Michigan, Cincinnati, Illinois and Kent State.

“I really like the coaches at OU,” Lowery said. “I went to a camp at Mentor and I liked the way they coached. They will yell at you, but they will turn around and help you get better.”

Lowery said he also felt comfortable with his visit to the Bobcats campus in Athens, which features a new field turf that has been installed at OU’s stadium. Lowery said a new field house is being built, and that after this football season and they will have a new weight room and new locker room.

“We’re extremely happy for Joe and his family,” Tallmadge coach Joe Vassalotti said. “He has received several MAC offers, in addition to ones from Illinois and Cincinnati. Through his junior year, Joe has earned a 3.81 cumulative GPA. His combined size, agility, physical toughness, and academic success have impressed college recruiters.”

Lowery, who plans to major in nursing at OU, started last season for Tallmadge at right tackle. He is set to start at left tackle this season, but is currently recovering from an off-season injury.

Tallmadge made the playoffs last season, its eighth appearance in the past nine seasons.
