Both of North Canton Hoover's double teams lost in the first round Friday. Juniors Rob DeMarco and Mike O'Connor lost to Mason 6-1, 6-0 and the team of senior Tyler Sarver and sophomore Tim Bruin lost to Upper Arlington 6-2, 6-0. Hoover coach Ryan Shaffer talked about his young squad being pushed into starting roles after graduating five seniors from last year's team.
"It was kinda unexpected, truthfully," Shaffer said of his teams making it to the state tournament. "All of these guys moved up in positions that were very challenging for them. For them to ultimately break through and mesh like they did at the end of the year and make the state tournament is a tremendous accomplishment. Going forward, we have some things to look forward to."
Copley's doubles team of sophomore Noah Hendrickson and senior Peter Harris beat Jerome High 6-3, 6-0. The Minutemen got off to a rocky start but calmed down and cruised in the second set.
"I was a little nervous with this being the first match back here," Harris said. "It's an overwhelming atmosphere and you gotta be tough. We just kinda stayed focused, stayed into the match, focused on one match at a time and we were able to pull through."
