VJ King of St. V-M set to train with USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team

St. Vincent-St. Mary basketball player VJ King is headed back to Colorado Springs to train with USA Basketball.

King is among a pool of 31 players practicing with the 2013-14 USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The sessions begin with a single practice today (Thursday), and will continue with two practices each day from May 31-June 6.

The pool of players will be trimmed to a 12-man team that will compete as the USA U16 National Team in Maldonado, Uruguay for the FIBA Americas U16 Championship from June 11-15.

The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship, with the top four finishing nations from the FIBA Americas U16 Championship advancing to the 2014 U17 Worlds.

Qualified to compete in the 2013 U16 Championship are host country Uruguay, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Bahamas, Argentina, Chile and the United States.

King is about to finish his freshman year at St. V-M. He is one of 18 players from the class of 2016 training in Colorado. The other 13 players are from the class of 2015.

King is the only player from Ohio in the group of 31 players.

There are 21 states represented, with California boasting the most with five. Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin each have two representatives. Ohio, Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, Oregon, South Carolina and Texas each feature one athlete.
