Akron native Darius Carter Jr. finishes season as Wichita State's fifth leading scorer

Akron native Darius Carter Jr. and the Wichita State University men’s basketball team saw their season come to an end Sunday following a 78-76 loss to Kentucky in the third round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

Wichita State ended its season with a 35-1 record. The Shockers set an NCAA record for consecutive wins to start a season with 35 victories.

Malone set to host annual Summit vs. Stark all-star basketball games

The 26th annual William Heichel Memorial Plain Rotary All-Star Classic is set for Wednesday at Malone University’s Osborne Hall.

Event organizer David Kraft said the basketball classic pits girls’ and boys’ all-star teams from Stark County and Summit County.

Ohio Mr. Basketball winner Luke Kennard of Franklin commits to Duke

Franklin junior basketball standout Luke Kennard gave a verbal commitment Monday to continue his academic and basketball careers on scholarship at Duke University.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Kennard made an official visit to Duke on March 8 and felt comfortable with coach Mike Krzyzewski and his staff.

Bettinger, Peters help Indiana Wesleyan win Division II NAIA national basketball title

Former area high school players DJ Bettinger and Bob Peters helped guide the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team to a 78-68 victory over Midland (Neb.) 78-68 in the 2014 Division II NAIA national championship game Tuesday night.

Bettinger, a 2011 Revere High School graduate, started and did not score in the championship game at Keeter Gymnasium in Point Lookout, Missouri. Peters, a 2013 Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academt graduate, played as a reserve and scored five points.

Area athletes win NCAA Indoor track and field titles

Five Northeast Ohio natives won a title in NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship between the Divisions I, II and III meets this past Saturday.

The champions were Shawn Barber of the University of Akron, Louisiana State's Quincy Downing of Cleveland Glenville High School, Lake Erie College's Jamil Dudley of Massillon Washington High School, Ashland's Jessica Bridenthal of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and Mount Union's Sean Donnelly of Willoughby South High School.

Copley names Scott Chouinard as head football coach

Copley High School will name Scott Chouinard as head football coach at 6 p.m. tonight at a Board Meeting, says athletic director Jim Borchik.

Borchik said Chouinard has served as an assistant at Kent Roosevelt for the past seven seasons (one under Ed Becker and six under John Nemec).

Wadsworth set to host boys basketball all-star game Wednesday

The Greater Akron Basketball Coaches Association is holding its 27th annual GABCA Boys All-Star Game Wednesday at Wadsworth High School.

The free throw, slam dunk, and 3-point shooting contest finals will begin at 6 p.m. and the all-star game will start at 7 p.m. All tickets are sold at the door and are $2 for students and $3 for adults.

Barberton set to host two girls basketball all-star games tonight

The Women’s Tri-County Basketball Coaches Association Senior Girls All-Star Games will take place tonight (Monday) on Greynolds Floor at Barberton High School.

There is a game scheduled for 6 p.m. between the Portage Stars and the Medina-Suburban All-Stars and a game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. between the City All-Stars and the Summit All-Stars.

The undefeated Wichita State men’s basketball team is the consensus No. 2 ranked team in the country following its victory in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday.

Akron native Darius Carter Jr. continues to play a key role for the Shockers, who are 34-0 overall and regulars on ESPN’s SportsCenter highlight show.

Report: North Canton Hoover parts ways with boys basketball coach Randy Montgomery

North Canton Hoover has decided to not renew the contract for boys basketball coach Randy Montgomery, according to the Canton Repository.

Montgomery exits with more than 200 games in 12 seasons at Hoover and three of the school’s past four Federal League titles in 30 seasons.

Todd Filtz resigns as Canton McKinley football coach

Todd Filtz has resigned as football coach at Canton McKinley following two seasons, according to a press release issued by Canton City Schools on Tuesday.

Filtz led McKinley to a 17-5 record during the past two seasons. The Bulldogs were Federal League champions and made the Division I playoffs in each of his seasons.

Buckeye boys basketball team reaches Division II district bracket

The Buckeye boys basketball team (21-3) will continue its season to remember at 7 p.m. Wednesday night against Vermilion (17-7) in a Division II district semifinal at Westlake High School.

Coach Matt Saunders led the Bucks to their first sectional title since 1993 and third in the past 61 seasons on March 1 with an 82-52 victory at home over Oberlin Firelands in a sectional final. Buckeye defeated Brooklyn 60-36 on Feb. 26 in a sectional semifinal.

OHSAA Commissioner Dan Ross reflects on Competitive Balance Proposal

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has designed a competitive balance proposal for the fourth year in a row for schools to consider.

The OHSAA Board of Directors unanimously approved a proposal Tuesday that makes modifications on how schools are placed in tournaments in team sports.

St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Aaron Adkins signs to wrestle at Ohio State

St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Aaron Adkins signed Tuesday to wrestle at Ohio State University.

Adkins, a Norton, resident, won his second consecutive Division II state wrestling title at 182-pounds this past weekend in Columbus. He also was a starting defensive lineman on the St. V-M football team that won the past two Division III state titles.

Hudson QB Mitchell Guadagni adds scholarship offer from Akron

Hudson junior quarterback Mitchell Guadagni has been offered a scholarship by the University of Akron, according to Hudson coach Ron Wright.

State wrestling: Rootstown’s Linton, St. V-M’s Adkins win second titles; Perry wins team title

COLUMBUS: Rootstown senior Travis Linton and St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Aaron Adkins concluded their high school wrestling careers in exciting fashion Saturday night.

Wrestling on mats right next to each other, Linton and Adkins each emerged victorious in the closing seconds of their 182-pound state championship matches in Division III and Division II, respectively, at Value City Arena in the Schottenstein Center.
