Final weekly football computer rankings

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Here are the final weekly football computer ratings from the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Ratings are by division and region with record and average bi-level points per game. The top eight teams in each region qualify for the regional quarterfinals November 5-6, with the top four seeds in each region hosting regional quarterfinal games.

Preview: Manchester (10-0, 6-0) @ CVCA (6-3, 5-1)

What's at stake:  The PAC-7 championship. A CVCA win would set up a possible three-way tie with Manchester and Triway, while a Panther victory gives coach Jim France another championhip trophy to add to his illustrious career.

CVCA needs a win to have a chance to qualify for the post season. The Royals are 11th in Division IV Region 13, while Manchester has clinched a home first round playoff game.

Firestone's Cody Grice picks Akron for football

Firestone High School senior running back Cody Grice gave an oral commitment to play football on scholarship at the University of Akron.

Grice, 6-foot and 240 pounds, said he plans to major in sports medicine at UA.

Orrville prepares for Wooster

The Orrville football team (6-3) concludes the regular season at Wooster at 7 p.m. Saturday.

"Wooster is very explosive on offense," Orrville coach Doug Davault said. "Their QB runs and throws well and they have excellent skill."

Report: Zips get another commitment

Archbishop Carroll (Washington D.C.) senior Jabari Thomas has reportedly made a verbal commitment to play football at Akron, according to ESPN.com.

Thomas (5-10, 175) is listed as an athlete on the website. He also considered Cincinnati, Ohio and Marshall, according to the website.

Recruiting analysts weigh in on Grant

The Detroit News had some perspective from recruiting analysts discussing  their opinions on where St.Vincent-St. Mary standout Doran Grant might land. The analysts believe Ohio State and Michigan State are the favorites with the Buckeyes purportedly with a slight edge.

Walsh prepares for Week 10

The Walsh Jesuit football team (6-3) concludes the regular season Friday night with a game at Toledo Bowsher. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

"Bowsher is very fast," Walsh coach Gerry Rardin said. "Strong at skill positions and good size up front. They are a run first team with the ability to hit the deep pass."

Defensive lineman visited Akron

Loveland senior DL David Moran recently took an unofficial visit to Akron, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Moran, who is 6-5 and 240 pounds, has four sacks for Loveland this season. Loveland is a Division I program located in suburban Cincinnati.

Moran has also received interest from other Mid-American Conference schools.

The big game - Ravenna @ Field

The Portage Trail Conference Metro Division has come down to a showdown with Ravenna at Field, both with records of 6-2 overall and 5-0 in the division at 7 Friday night.

The other big element of this contest is playoff position. The Field Falcons  is third in the Division III, Region 9 controlling their own destiny according to joeeitel.com website behind Cardinal Mooney and Parma Padua.

Garfield prepares for Firestone

The Garfield football team plays host to Firestone at 7 p.m. today and Rams coach Bob Sax said the key for Garfield will be to stop the Falcons' running game.

"Firestone is a good football team that is big on the line and has some good running backs and skilled players," Sax said.

Mogadore gets to stay home

According to joeeitel.com, a website that tracks computer football ratings that determine the state playoffs, the Mogadore football team has clinched a first round home game.

The Wildcats, 8-0, are the No. 1 team in Division VI, Region 21.

Zips offer junior guard

Aiken junior guard William Moore was offered by the University of Akron last week, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Moore is one of the state’s top basketball players in the 2012 class. He also has offers from Ohio, Miami University, Kent State and James Madison.

Canton South junior pitcher Logan Bowles committed to Ohio State Saturday, the first player in the Buckeyes 2012 baseball recruiting class.

``Its special,’’ Bowles said of the being the first in the recruiting class. ``It means they are interested me and I want to play there. I am excited for it.’’

Chippewa wins WCAL girls soccer crown

Chippewa clinched the girls soccer Wayne County Athletic League regular season title with a 3-0 victory over host Norwayne on Thursday night.

Sophomore Gabby Data, sophomore Marisa Fluharty and senior Sarah Yoho scored one goal apiece for the visiting Chipps (9-2-3, 8-0-2).

Norton and Wooridge win PTC boys soccer titles

The Norton boys soccer team won its first league championship by claiming the Portage Trail Conference Metro Division title with a 4-0 victory over Ravenna on Tuesday night.

Panthers senior forward Donovan Kohler scored all four goals in the win against the Ravens and leads the team with 16 goals this season.

The Rematch - Ravenna at Kent Roosevelt

One of the best games of last season was the PTC showdown between Kent Roosevelt at Ravenna. The wild affair went to overtime when the Ravens, trailing by one converted a 2-point conversion to win 29-28.

This year's rematch has a lot on the line tonight in Kent. In terms of the race for the Portage Trail Conference Metro Division, Ravenna is 3-0 and 4-2 overall and Kent Roosevelt is 2-1 and 5-1 overall, losing to the other 3-0 team in the division, Field.

Garfield prepares for East

Garfield (2-4) plays East (1-5) at noon Saturday and Rams coach Bob Sax said Garfield must play fundamentally sound on both sides of the ball and play for four quarters.

"East is a very aggressive team with weapons on offense," Sax said. "...They have shown that they can play with anyone."

Redmond, who is 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, also has offers from Miami University, Air Force, Akron and Buffalo, according to ScoutingOhio.com.

If this football season has shown one thing it's that this area is loaded with a plethora of talented defensive ends.

While the ones who have received looks from upper echelon Division I schools such as Ohio State deserve the attention, there are a couple in the area blooming late.  Among them:  Trevoris Bell and Kevin Brewton, two defensive ends who toil in the City Series for East High and Garfield, respectively.

State soccer polls

The Medina girls’ soccer team is ranked No. 2 in the Division I state coaches’ poll this week. Medina entered the week with a 9-0-2 record and had three first-place votes.

Walsh Jesuit is No. 8 in the Division I poll and Jackson is No. 10.
