Wrestling: Wadsworth reigns supreme at SLT

By jcfortun Published: February 14, 2010

Saturday offered that final week of "practice" before sectional and district tournaments fire up this week.

I only call it practice because that is how Wadsworth senior Louden Gordon referred to it Saturday at the Suburban League Tournament at Wadsworth High School.

Winning the SLT is nice, he said. But the real prizes await in sectionals, districts and, hopefully, state tournament.

Wadsworth wrestled in the finals in each of the 14 weight classes at the SLT. The only thing surprising is that they didn't win every one of them.

Here is the Championship round results with the Wadsworth wrestlers in bold to showcase the dominance:

103 – First: Shump (Barberton) dec. B. Jones (Wadsworth), 2-1; Third: Prebonic (Highland), major dec. Soltis (Copley), 15-4.

--- Close match. Wadsworth coach John Gramuglia was heated at the officials afterward, going as far as telling the one "That is one match you screw is out of."  it all stemmed from a boundary situation where Gramuglia felt Jones should have been awarded two points near the end of the match.

112 – First: A. Gray (Wadsworth) dec. C. Fehr (Barberton), 3-1, OT; Third: S. Bloniak (Highland) pinned Midock (Tallmadge), :55.

119 – First: K. Squire (Wadsworth) pinned Black (Green), :35; Third: C. Wheeler (Tallmadge) dec. Double (Highland), 10-8.

112 – First: Baughman (Wadsworth) dec. Strobelt-McCann (Copley), 11-4; Third: Damsa (Barberton) dec. Peterson (Revere), 10-5.

130 – First: J. Rininger (Highland) dec. C. Jones (Wadsworth), 3-2; Third: Walker (Copley) dec. Fitzgerald (Green), 7-2.

-- Another close one. It looked as if Jones had him beat until Rininger scored a two-point Reversal as time expired. Great ending.

135 – First: Gordon (Wadsworth) dec. Mirman (Highland), 13-6; Third: Marshall (Copley) dec. Fowler (Cloverleaf), 3-1.
-- The premier match up of the night. It is always exciting when these two get together. At the North Canton Holiday Tournament Gordon won with a pin in triple overtime. Saturday wasn't their best match together, but still fun to watch. Gordon possesses cat-like quickness.

140 – First: Ball (Wadsworth) dec. Garrison (Copley), 11-4; Third: Hymes (Barberton) dec. C. Rininger (Highland), 5-4.

145 – First: B. Squire (Wadsworth) major dec. Tomayko (Copley), 16-5; Third; Thornton (Barberton) dec. Vilimonic (Highland), 4-2.

-- Squire is now a four-time Suburban League champion.

152 – First: Wenger (Wadsworth) dec. T. Bloniak (Highland), 7-4; Third: Tschantz (Barberton) dec. Baker (Cloverleaf), 9-3.

160 – First: Brandenburg (Wadsworth) dec. Kluk (Highland), 11-3; Third: I. Wheeler (Copley) pinned Williams (Tallmadge) 4:50.

171 – First: S. Wheeler (Copley) inj. def. Randolph (Wadsworth). Third: Peterson (Revere) pinned Harvey (Barberton), 2:47.

-- Randolph was unable to continue after receiving a gash above his eye. The blood flow was impeding his vision. last I heard he was heading out to get stitches.

189 – First: Busson (Wadsworth) pinned Rowe (Barberton), ; Third: Morton (Cloverleaf) dec. Casanova (Copley), 3-2.

215 – First: Tavanello (Wadsworth) pinned A. Schantz (Barberton), 3:56; Third: Vozar (Cloverleaf) dec. Fitzgerald (Green), 7-2.

HVY – First: Buzzelli (Wadsworth) pinned Hiss (Copley) :49; Third: Antoniotti (Barberton) dec. Dahlman (Green), 3-1.

-- Buzzelli became a four-time Suburban League Champion.

David lee Morgan handled the City Series wrestling championship, which was in a dual format. Kenmore won all five of its matches.

The PTC will be finishing up today. Coventry was in the lead after day one.

Wondering where your team will be for Districts and sectionals? Here is the OHSAA link. Area schools should be in the Northeast district.
