Hoban girls soccer ranked No. 1 in Division II state poll

Archbishop Hoban is ranked No. 1 in Division II in the state girls soccer coaches poll.

Hoban is 9-1-1 with win over Parma Heights Holy Name (4-0), a loss to Jackson (4-2), wins over Clear Fork (7-3), Green (1-0) and Coventry (9-0), a 1-1 draw with Mentor Lake Catholic and wins over Northwest (5-0), Padua (3-1), CVCA (2-1), ND-CL (5-0) and St. Vincent-St. Mary (11-0).

The Knights will play at Beaumont at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“The group is talented,” Hoban coach Patrick Dobbins said. “At times, we are finishing very well. When we do that, we are very difficult to handle. All in all, we have a great group of kids who are playing very well together and we have a balanced scoring sheet.”

Walsh Jesuit girls soccer ranked No. 1 in Division I state poll

Walsh Jesuit is No. 1 in the Division I state girls soccer coaches poll.

Walsh is 9-0-1 with a 0-0 draw against Sylvania Northview, and wins over Solon (1-0), Twinsburg (4-1), Chardon Notre-Dame Cathedral Latin (5-0), South Side from Rockville, N.Y. (3-1), Parma Padua (7-2), Kent Roosevelt (9-0), Jackson (6-0), Garfield Heights Beaumont (7-0) and Lewis Center Olentangy Orange (1-0).

The Warriors will host Mentor Lake Catholic at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“This is the part of the regular season when you are afraid that somebody might get hurt,” WJ coach Dino McIntyre said. “You are still playing to get one of the top seeds in your district so you can host some games, but at the same time you don’t want to get anybody hurt. These next six games are against teams that go deep in the playoffs usually. They will be demanding physically. I hope we have no injuries and we get some more results.”

APS sets City Series football championship for Nov. 6 at UA

Akron Public Schools Athletic Director Joe Vassalotti announced Tuesday that the City Series football championship game kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6.

The game will be at the University of Akron’s InfoCision Stadium, and feature the top two teams in the City standings, excluding any that qualify for the OHSAA playoffs.

The City Series first held a title game on Thanksgiving Day in 1942 at the Rubber Bowl. The game became a tradition within Summit County, annually drawing large crowds from 1948 to 1990 before it was stopped as a result of the expanding OHSAA playoffs.

“Our game sponsors, Most Known Unknown Athletics and Akron’s Very Own aim to honor all fall sports and marching band members,” Vassalotti said in a press release.

Great American Rivalry Series selects Hoban vs. St. V-M game

The Great American Rivalry Series has selected the Archbishop Hoban and St. Vincent-St. Mary as one of its featured games this season.

This rivalry game between the Knights and Irish will be presented by the United States Marine Corpsand played on Friday at the University of Akron’s InfoCision Stadium.

Featuring some of the longest running rivalries in high school football, the 2015 Great American Rivalry Series will feature 100 showdowns nationwide.

This is the 12th year the Great American Rivalry Series has selected an exclusive collection of top-notch rivalries across the United States of America, covering 40 states and over 100 cities throughout the country.

Chris Brennan scores 50th goal to become Copley boys soccer all-time leader

Copley senior Chris Brennan enters the weekend as the all-time leading scorer in Indians boys soccer history after scoring two goals Tuesday in a 9-0 win over visiting Barberton.

Brennan has 50 career goals heading into Saturday’s match at 5 p.m. at Whitehouse Anthony Wayne.

“Chris Brennan is already the most decorated player in Copley High School history,” Indians coach David Antal said. “The fact that he now holds the record for most goals in a career isn’t Earth shattering. It is more of a formality. He is a wonderful young man with an incredible knack for scoring goals. This record only reaffirms Chris as one of the finest soccer players in the history of Copley High School.”

Antal, a 1995 Copley graduate, is second on the list with 49 goals. Skye Harter (2015 graduate, 47 goals), Josh Williams (2006 graduate, 45 goals) Jeremy Sheldon (1997 graduate, 36 goals) and Dan Revesz (2007 graduate, 36 goals) round out the top five.

Twinsburg hires Phil Schmook to be boys basketball coach

Twinsburg Superintendent Kathryn Powers announced the hiring of Phil Schmook as the Tigers new high school boys basketball coach.

“The Twinsburg Tiger Basketball program is one that is deeply steeped in pride,” Powers said in a prepared statement.

“We recognize that our community members, alumni, students, family and staff want the best for our student-athletes and we want to ensure that our student-athletes display integrity, sportsmanship and loyalty each and every time they step on the court.

“During the interview process, the committee learned exactly what coach Schmook would bring to the Twinsburg Tiger Basketball program. Coach Schmook has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game combined with his dedication and his vision for the future. We believe Coach Schmook will take the Twinsburg Tiger Basketball program to the next level.”

Hoban hires Andy Capraruolo as baseball coach, Frank Voss as softball coach

Archbishop Hoban Athletic Director Joe Beyer announced the hiring of Andy Capraruolo as Hoban’s new baseball coach and Frank Voss as the Knights new softball coach.

Capraruolo takes over the baseball program after Jim Diestel stepped aside following seven seasons as coach with a 112-75 record.

“Coach Capraruolo is a baseball guy through and through,” Beyer said. “He most recently coached at Stow-Munroe Falls High School from 2012-2014. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Kent State University from 2007-2009. He also coached a year at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and has been a head coach for the Lake Erie Bulldogs Baseball Club since 2010.”

Diestel went over 100 wins in 2015 after leading two teams to Columbus. Hoban went 19-9 in 2011 and finished as Division II state runner-up. The 2013 Knights went 20-11 and was a Division II state semifinalist. His teams won two North Coast League Blue Division championships, five sectional titles, two district crowns and two regional titles.
