OHSAA & Massillon lawyers reach deal to restore eligibility for Thayer Munford

By Michael Beaven Published: September 22, 2016

In an interesting turn of events, the Massillon Tigers are set to welcome a big addition to the football team in three weeks.

Ohio High School Athletic Association and Massillon Washington High School lawyers agreed to make highly regarded senior lineman Thayer Munford eligible to play in 2016.

The Massillon Independent first reported a deal was struck Wednesday in the courtroom of Stark County Common Pleas Judge John Haas. It was a deal proposed by OHSAA counsel Steve Craig, which makes Munford, a Cincinnati La Salle transfer, able to play for Massillon in Week 8 against visiting Firestone on Oct. 14.

The Independent reports the OHSAA agreed to the deal on the condition that Munford scores at least a 2.0 grade-point-average in the current grading period. A subsequent check-in will take place when the grading period ends on Oct. 21.

OHSAA announces initial findings & penalties against Hoban football team

By Michael Beaven Published: September 19, 2016

The Ohio High School Athletic Association will announce Tuesday its plan to sanction Archbishop Hoban football coach Tim Tyrrell.

The Akron Beacon Journal received an advanced copy of the OHSAA’s decision on Monday. The press release is five paragraphs and states that “While the investigation into the football program at Akron Archbishop Hoban on a number of allegations is still ongoing, the Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced the initial findings and penalties against the school.”

The penalties stem from a violation of OHSAA Bylaw 4-9-2 – Recruiting. The OHSAA says that “Tyrrell initiated contact in the fall of 2015 with a student at St. Hilary Elementary School.”

There are three initial penalties listed –a postseason coaching suspension for Tyrrell if Hoban qualifies for the 2016 playoffs, Hoban is placed on probation for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year and all of the 2017-2018 school year, and Tyrrell will be limited to a total of five days of contact with the Knights football team during the summer of 2017 instead of the usual 10 days.

OHSAA set to punish Hoban football coach if Knights advance to playoffs in 2016

By Michael Beaven Published: September 15, 2016

Archbishop Hoban has been notified by the Ohio High School Athletic Association that its football coach, Tim Tyrrell, will be suspended if the Knights qualify for the playoffs in 2016.

Tyrrell guided Hoban to a Division III state championship victory over Toledo Central Catholic in Columbus in 2015, but he might be on the sidelines this postseason.

Hoban President Todd R. Sweda sent a six paragraph email to parents, students, staff and alumni on Thursday informing the Knights faithful  “that head football coach TimTyrrell was found in violation of a recruiting regulation.”

“We firmly believe that there was no intent to knowingly violate any rule. The contact occurred at a local grade school in an open, public place during a visit that was authorized by the grade school administration. Upon review shortly after the meeting, the administration and coach Tyrrell recognized how it could be interpreted as a violation and immediately accepted responsibility for the mistake.”

Football: OHSAA denies Massillon's appeal regarding senior star

By Michael Beaven Published: September 15, 2016

Senior Thayer Munford will remain ineligible to compete on the Massillon football team in 2016 following an unsuccessful appeal to the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Tim Stried, the OHSAA’s Director of Communications issued a statement that said: “Representatives of a student-athlete from Massillon Washington High School met with the OHSAA Appeals Panel on Sept. 8 to appeal the penalty previously handed down to the student-athlete. Today, the appeals panel announced it has denied the appeal and will uphold the penalty that declared the student ineligible for the 2016 season. None of the other penalties levied against the school’s football program were appealed on Sept. 8.”

The OHSAA penalized Massillon’s football team for recruiting violations in August just before the 2016 season started. The investigation involved several football players who were recruited to attend Massillon by its coach, Nate Moore, along with assistant football coaches and booster club members.

Massillon was fined $5,000, placed on probation through the end of the 2018-2019 school yearand Moore is suspended from coaching the Tigers in the 2016 playoffs if the team qualifies.
