Akron men's soccer earns No. 1 national ranking
The University of Akron men’s soccer team is No. 1 in the country just in time for the postseason.
Zips coach Caleb Porter found out Tuesday that his players have earned the No. 1 ranking in the national coaches poll. Maryland, North Carolina, Georgetown and UCLA are ranked second through fifth.
UA (15-1-2, 7-0-0) won the Mid-American Conference regular season championship and will host the MAC Tournament this weekend. The Zips also have several victories against nationally ranked opponents.
The top-seeded Zips will meet the fourth-seeded Bowling Green Falcons (8-8-3, 3-3-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in one semifinal. The second-seeded the Northern Illinois Huskies (6-9-3) will play the third-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (9-5-2, 4-2-1) in the other semifinal at 4 p.m. Friday.
The semifinal winners will meet in the championship match at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Zips are No. 1 for the third time in the past four seasons (2009, 2010 and 2012) and fourth time overall (2005).
Junior forward Reinaldo Brenes is the Zips top goal scorer with 10 goals.
Senior midfielder Scott Caldwell has nine goals and six assists, and senior goalkeeper David Meves has 14 shutouts.
