Baldwin Wallace baseball team ready for NCAA Division III World Series

The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team will play in its first NCAA Division III World Series at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin.

BWU will meet Emory (Ga.) University on Friday at 2:15 p.m.

BWU has a school-record 29 victories and 18 losses under coach Brian Harrison. The Yellow Jackets tied for fourth during the OAC regular season and finished second at the OAC Tournament. They won last weekend’s NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional with victories over Misericordia (Pa.), Haverford (Pa.), Susquehanna (Pa.) and Wesleyan (Conn.) in Moosic, Pa.

Junior Kyle Chontos is BWU’s top hitter with a .380 average, five home runs, 49 RBI and 45 runs. Chontos, sophomore Mark Zimmerman (Green), senior Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) and sophomore Hunter Handel (Green) earned first-team All-OAC honors.

Zimmerman has a .379 average, three home runs, 44 RBI and 49 runs. Gugliotta has a .379 average, one home run, 31 RBI and 58 runs. Handel has a .377 average, four home runs, 45 RBI and 26 runs.

Zimmerman was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament Most Valuable Player and was joined by Gugliotta and Chontos on the all-tournament team.

Junior Cory Waite is BWU’s pitching ace at 7-2 and a 3.09 ERA. He is joined in the rotation by sophomore Alex Albright (North Royalton, 5-2, 4.12), freshman Logan Heffernan (4-3, 3.20) and senior Cory Durbin (GlenOak, 1-1, 4.17).

Sophomore Brandon Cichocki is the BWU’s closer at 2-2, a 2.45 ERA and eight saves. Zimmerman, senior Jon Capadona (North Royalton), junior Anthony Alioto Jr., sophomore Matt Wittels and senior Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) also contribute regularly as pitchers.

BWU’s hitting corps also includes seniors Joe Hiller (Twinsburg), Ethan Shrake (Canton McKinley) and Drew Mahler (Wooster), sophomores Jerry Scholle (Highland) and John Taylor (Hudson) and freshmen Cole Nieto (Brunswick) and Steve Montgomery (Canton Central Catholic).
