Benedictine eliminates St. V-M
The St. Vincent-St. Mary boys basketball team saw its season come to an end Saturday afternoon at the Canton Memorial Civic Center.
Cleveland Benedictine defeated St. V-M 64-61 in a Division II regional final. The Bengals advance to a state semifinal game in Columbus.
Senior guard Cameron Wright led the Bengals (22-4) with 21 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Derek Jackson (17 points) and senior forward Nick Harney (12 points) also scored in double figures for Benedictine.
Senior guard Dominique Mitchell paced the Fighting Irish (17-7) with 16 points. Sophomore forward Lorenzo Cugini (15 points), junior guard Ricky Johnson Jr. (13 points) and junior forward JaKarr Sampson (11 points) also scored in double figures for St. V-M.
Cugini and Sampson each grabbed five rebounds.
The score was tied 10-10 after one quarter. St. V-M held a 34-21 halftime lead. Benedictine rallied and trailed 44-42 after three quarters.
The Bengals led 62-54 with 48 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The Irish cut their deficit to 62-61 with 8.7 seconds to go, but would no closer.
Benedictine won state titles in 1997 and 1998.
St. V-M won state titles in 1984, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2009.
