Bruce Johnson in line to be new Green AD; Mark Pfaff to Kent Roosevelt
Green High School Principal Cindy Brown said Thursday that she is recommending Bruce Johnson as Athletic Director to Superintendent Michael Nutter.
Nutter and the Green Board of Education will meet May 21 and on the agenda is the hiring of the Bulldogs Athletic Director
Johnson, 57, is currently the Assistant Athletic Director at High Point Christian Academy in High Point, N.C. He previously served as Warren Howland’s Athletic Director.
“Bruce has a tremendous amount of experience at being an Athletic Director in a community much like Green,” Brown said. “We were just blown over by his enthusiasm, his experience and his creative ideas for athletics.”
Brown also confirmed Thursday that current Green Athletic Director Mark Pfaff has agreed to take the Kent Roosevelt Athletic Director position for next school year.
Brown recommended a two-year contract extension for Pfaff, but the Green Board of Education decided against that and did not renew his contract in March.
Pfaff is finishing the school year as Green’s athletic director.
“I just wish Mark the best of luck,” Brown said. “He is a great guy and deserves the best.”
Johnson was one of 84 applicants that applied for the Green Athletic Director position. There were then 15 people interviewed last week and three – Johnson, Manchester High School Assistant Prinicpal A.J. Hite and Berlin Hiland High School Athletic Director Erik Beun – were finalists that were interviewed again Tuesday night.
Johnson, a Youngstown State University graduate, served as Howland’s Athletic Director from 2000-2008. He is married with an adult son. He taught and coached boys basketball and baseball at Vienna Mathews High School from 1979-90 and then at Chagrin Falls High School from 1990-2000.
Johnson was a consultant at Streetsboro from 2009-2010 and then was an Assistant Athletic Director and assistant coach in boys basketball and baseball at High Point Christian Academy.
Pfaff is in his 12th year as the Green Athletic Director and has been in the school system for 23 years.
Pfaff will be officially hired at Kent’s school board meeting on May 15. He will take over the position after long-time Athletic Director Ernie Rutzky decided to retire.
