Buchtel cross country and track and field coach John Scott is hall of fame bound.
Scott will be enshrined in the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame at a banquet at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Hilton at Easton in Columbus.
Scott, 65, is in his 35th year coaching Buchtel athletes.
“I am honored and I am grateful,” Scott said. “When something like this happens it causes you to look back on all of the years you have coached and all of the young people that you have coached.”
Scott, a graduate of Kenmore High School in 1966 and the University of Akron in 1983, formerly taught at Buchtel and is in his fifth year of retirement from the classroom.
Jim Cahoon, a former Buchtel coach in multiple sports, will be Scott’s presenter.
“I appreciate the award,” Scott said. “I always wanted to be a teacher and a coach. Along the way, I got kinda sidetracked in life. I went through Vietnam [in 1969 and 1970] and then worked at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for a while [in the 1970s]. I got laid off from work and then got hooked up with coach [Bill] Heideman.
“He rekindled in me the idea of still being a teacher and a coach. He asked me to come here and help him. He could have asked anybody to help him. I had never coached in track and field, but he asked me. I have enjoyed every minute of it since. I have enjoyed interacting with all the young people. A lot of the young people I have coached have gone on and done well with their lives. I find that rewarding. I got a lot of nice comments on Facebook congratulating me about the award and phone calls and texts. That is special when the kids thank you.”
Scott has been selected the City Series Coach of the Year 10 times between the two sports and was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
