Walsh Jesuit prepares for season
The Walsh Jesuit football team opens the season Aug. 27 when it plays host to Louisville at 7 p.m. Walsh coach Gerry Rardin said he likes the team's focus going into the official start of practice on Monday.
"Team is learning a lot right now," Rardin said in an e-mail this week. "The thing like most is that they are tireless workers."

What's Being Heard Out of Hoban
Among high school football fans in the area, the names are recognizable - Greg McMullen and LaTroy Lewis.
Call them Archbishop Hoban's bookends on the defensive line, which because of their presence could be the best in the area. Here's the kicker: they're only juniors.

Important Dates for Upcoming High School Football Season
Some fans out there know whether they have a competitive team, others have little clue. Still here's a list of the important dates for high school football on the Ohio High School Athletic Association calendar:
Aug. 2: First day of coaching
Aug. 10 – Aug. 21: Scrimmages allowed
Aug. 23 – Oct. 30: Regular season
Oct. 11: Non-conference play ends
Nov. 5: 7:30 p.m., Regional Quarterfinal Tournaments (Div. II, IV, VI)
Nov. 6: 7 p.m., Regional Quarterfinal Tournaments: (Div. I, III, V)
Nov. 12: 7:30 p.m., Regional Semifinal Tournaments (Div. II, IV, VI)
Nov. 13: 7 p.m., Regional Semifinal Tournaments (Div. I, Div. III, V)

North Carolina offers Smith
Buchtel junior WR Corey Smith has reportedly been offered by North Carolina, according to ScoutingOhio.com.
Smith (6 feet, 170 pounds) also has offers from Michigan State, Akron, Toledo and Miami (Ohio).

Avon Lake senior tackle Andrew Bohan (6-5, 270) has reportedly made an oral commitment to play at Akron, according to ScoutingOhio.com.
Valley View senior quarterback Kyle Pohl (6-3, 205) has reportedly made an oral commitment to play at Akron, according to ScoutingOhio.com. He also reportedly had an offer from Ohio University.

Report: Michigan State offers Smith
Buchtel junior wide receiver Corey Smith (6-0, 170) has reportedly added an offer from Michigan State, according to ScoutingOhio.com.
Smith also reportedly has offers from Toledo, Miami (Ohio) and Akron. Smith is considered to be one of the state’s top players in the 2012 class.

Doran Grant ranked No. 1 Ohio football player in Class of 2011
OhioVarsity.com announced its Class of 2011 Preseason Top 150 high school football players in the state of Ohio.
Doran Grant is ranked No. 1 and Steve Miller is ranked No. 5 on the list that has several area players on it.

Firestone RB Cody Grice to wait until after his senior season to choose college
Firestone senior running back Cody Grice said he has received scholarship offers to play football at the University of Akron and Alabama State University, but he plans to wait until after the 2010 season to make a commitment.
Grice revealed his plan during a phone interview Thursday with the Beacon Journal.

Grant selected for national event
St. Vincent-St. Mary DB Doran Grant has been selected to participate in the Champion Gridiron Kings high school football event July 24-25 in suburban Orlando.
The event will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. It will feature 65 high school players competing at seven skill positions, including quarterback, running back, tight end, wide receiver, linebacker, cornerback and safety.

Garfield still considering QB options
Garfield football coach Bob Sax said he hasn't made any decisions on his quarterback situation yet, but does return starter Darius Hoisten, who is the frontrunner at this point in the summer.
Hoisten, who will be a junior, ran most offensive sets except for the times when Tyson Gulley ran the spread formation.

Former Racer in line to become Medina softball head coach.
Former Akron racer infielder Jessica Toocheck is considered a favorite to become the head softball coach at Medina High School.
Toocheck is a Medina High School graduate who played shortstop for the Battling Bees. She also played at Kent State University before joining the Racers in the 2008 season after graduating from KSU and played two seasons.

Germantown Valley View quarterback Kyle Pohl has reportedly been offered by Akron, according to ScoutingOhio.com.
It is reportedly the first scholarship offer for Pohl, who is 6 feet 3 and 205 pounds.

Green defensive lineman Dylan Brumbaugh made an oral commitment to play football at Akron on Wednesday, according to Green coach Tom Stacy.
Brumbaugh, who is 6 feet 5 and 255 pounds, also had offers from Marshall and Youngstown State.
