Wadsworth & Aurora wrestlers win national titles
Wadsworth High School sophomore-to-be Kagan Squire and Aurora High School senior-to-be Ty Mitch each won a national championship at the at the USA Cadet and Junior Freestyle & Greco-Roman Championships in Fargo, N.D. this past weekend.
Squire went undefeated in all 10 matches winning the Cadet National crown at 119 pounds. He earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year after placing third at 105 last year. Squire placed third in the Division I state tournament this past year for the Grizzlies at 112 with a record of 44-7.

Hoban's McMullen selected for national list
Archbishop Hoban High School sophomore-to-be Greg McMullen was selected to the CBS MaxPreps Top 100 list of football players in the country for the class of 2012, the publication’s National Football Editor Stephen Spiewak said via e-mail.
McMullen was a key player for the Knights defense last season as a freshman. Hoban qualified for the state football playoffs.

Schrock and Hoobler commit to Akron for football
Area senior football standouts Anthony Schrock and Chase Hoobler have each orally committed to play football on scholarship at the University of Akron.
The duo confirmed the committments today (Monday) by telephone and both said the UA coaching staff, the UA facilities and closeness to home were major factors in joining the 2010 recruiting class.

Gulley will wait before making decision
Garfield senior RB Tyson Gulley will likely wait until after the Rams' season before he makes his college visits and selects a program, according to Garfield coach Bob Sax.
Gulley is one of the area's top players in the 2010 class. He has several Division I scholarship offers.

Hoover's Warren selected for softball showcase event
Erika Warren of North Canton Hoover High School has recently been selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase South (QDSS) in Rock Hill, S.C. The event runs from September 4-6 at Winthrop University.
Warren is a sophomore-to-be at Hoover and plays catcher.

Canton McKinley senior-to-be LB Jewone Snow is still reportedly considering his college options, Canton McKinley coach Ron Johnson told the Canton Repository for a story this past weekend.
Snow has offers from several major Division I schools, including programs in the Big Ten.

Report: Barberton QB commits
Barberton senior-to-be QB Kyle Snyder has reportedly made an oral commitment to play at Ohio University, according to ScoutingOhio.com.
Snyder, who is 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, is a three-year starter, according to the Web site. He has thrown for 5,200 yards and 47 touchdowns in his career, according to the site.

Solon senior DE Darryl Baldwin has orally committed to play at Ohio State. Baldwin made the decision on Sunday. He also had several other Division I offers.

Youngstown Cardinal Mooney senior RB-DB Ray Vinopal (5-11, 185) has been offered by Kent State, according to ScoutingOhio.com. He also reportedly has an offer from Bowling Green.

Garfield player has attention
Garfield sophomore-to-be Toneo Gulley is rated the state's No. 10 football player in the 2012 class, according to JJHuddle.com's Ohio High Magazine.
The Web site said Gulley had 64 tackles last season. Gulley is the younger brother of senior-to-be Tyson Gulley.

Kent State has offered Lebanon senior-to-be defensive end Elias Sayre (6-5, 260). He also has an offer from Air Force.
Lebanon is north of Cincinnati, near Dayton.

East basketball update
There is plenty of optimism within the East girls' basketball program this summer. East returns returns three starters from last season and should have more experience.
"So far this summer our attitudes have improved and the kids seem to be hungry to improve," East coach Mike Eberhart said.

Walsh Jesuit senior RB-DB Cameron Ontko (6-0, 215) might be getting closer to a college decision, according to Walsh coach Gerry Rardin.
Ontko has offers that include Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Eastern Michigan, Indiana and Bowling Green.

The official start of practice for area football teams is Monday, Aug. 3. The regular season officially starts Aug. 24.
The postseason begins Nov. 6. The state finals are Dec. 4 and 5 in Stark County.

Pakan wins Home Run Derby
Minutes after the Akron Aeros left the Canal Park field Tuesday night it was the high school batters time to take their chops in the finale of the High School Home Run Derby.
Three contestants – Tallmadge’s Paul Pakan, Walsh Jesuit’s Matt Keller and Firestone’s Justin McDowell – hit balls deep. They hit balls far.

Louisville senior-to-be WR Bobby Swigert has several Division I offers, including Stanford, Boston College, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan and several MAC schools.
Swigert reportedly told Rivals.com he has been to camps at Notre Dame and Ohio State this summer.

Highland senior receives honor
Highland senior-to-be Aaron Maslowski won the MVP award for running backs at the Ohio Varsity Top 100 Football Camp last Saturday at Kent State, according to Rivals.com.
Maslowski (5-10, 180) has received interest from several MAC schools and also Ivy League programs, according to the Web site.
