OHSAA Releases Weekly Football Computer Ratings

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its weekly football computer ratings Tuesday, Oct. 29. The weekly computer ratings are released every Tuesday afternoon beginning after the fourth week of the season, leading up to the final report this Sunday morning, Nov. 3.

STVM senior Dante Booker Jr. among candidates for Butkus Award

CHICAGO– (October 28, 2013) – Leading candidates for football’s prestigious Butkus Award® honoring the nation’s top football linebackers were announced today by the Butkus Foundation, and Akron resident Dante Booker Jr. is on the list.

The 12 collegiate semi-finalists include returning finalist C.J. Mosley of Alabama. The 12 high school finalists are from eight states, with three each from Ohio and Florida. Booker is a senior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and is an Ohio State University recruit. Finalists will be announced November 26 and winners will be announced by December 10. The pro winner will be announced in early 2014.

Video: Listen to the poem that got a Rittman football player kicked off team

RITTMAN: A high school football player says he was kicked off the team and suspended from school after he wrote a poem for English class critical of his team.

WJW-TV reports that 16-year-old Nick Andre was punished after reading the poem in class. The assignment was to write about something that made him angry, and he took out his frustration on the 1-7 Rittman High School gridiron team.

Coventry set to host a “Tackling Cancer Together” event Friday night

Coventry is hosting a “Tackling Cancer Together” event Friday night when the Comets football team plays against the Field Falcons.

The school and community have set up a fundraising event to raise money for beating cancer. As of Thursday, the event has raised around $7,000. Event organizers are encouraging the public to help increase the amount, and everyone who attends the game should wear pink.

Seven area football teams are two wins shy of 10-0 regular season

The seven teams are Ellet, St. Vincent-St. Mary, Hudson, Nordonia, Highland, Canton McKinley and Louisville.

Ellet football on a roll, aims for second playoff appearance in a row

Ellet (8-0, 4-0) brings a 12-game City Series winning streak into its football game with visiting Garfield (5-3, 3-1) on Friday night.

Ellet, the defending City Series champions, is 4-0 in the league in 2013 after winning all six of its league games in 2012 and its final two league games in 2011.

Highland & Nordonia set too meet in Week Nine football showdown

When Highland (8-0, 5-0) visits Nordonia (8-0, 5-0) Friday night it will mark just the second time in Suburban League history that two teams will meet with perfect records in Week Nine, according to league historian Phil Heyn of Revere.

The other time it happened was 2010 when Tallmadge and Copley entered into a Week Nine game against each other with identical 8-0, 5-0 records. The visiting Blue Devils won the game 34-14 over the Indians.

St. V-M seeks football victory at Massillon to contine win streak

St. Vincent-St. Mary (8-0) brings a 14-game winning streak into its game at Massillon (7-1) on Friday night.

St. V-M, the defending Division III state champion, has not lost since host Massillon topped them 44-23 on Oct. 19, 2012.

Wooster's Mike Merritt selected to play in national baseball classic

Wooster resident Mike Merritt has been selected to compete at the Baseball Factory Winter Classic in December following a strong performance at the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Trenton, NJ earlier this month.

The Baseball Factory Winter Classic in St. Petersburg, FL is a national event sponsored by Under Armour and powered by Baseball Factory. Merritt, who is an eighth-grade student in Wooster, plays catcher. He is one a select group of 12-to-14 year old players from across the country that will travel to Florida for four days of intense training and competitive game play.

Revere tops Division II soccer rankings

Revere is ranked No. 1 in the Division II state boys soccer coaches’ poll this week. Revere is 13-0-1 entering this week. CVCA (8-3) is No. 4. Hoban (9-2-1) is ninth.

In Division I, Jackson (11-2-2) is fifth. In Division III, Chippewa (11-0-3) is No. 10.
